Timesland stars shine for West in coaches' all-star game
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Timesland players dominated as the West All-Stars defeated the East 7-2 in the Virginia High School Coaches Association boys soccer all-star game on Wednesday night at Christopher Newport University.
Patrick Henry's Cameron Chavira was the West most valuable player after scoring two goals in the second half. Chavira's PH teammate Robert Bear also scored two goals.
The West led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Christiansburg's Carl Leist and Blacksburg's Dehmed Smith. Smith assisted on Leist's goal.
Smith also scored in the second half. Radford's Taka Masuda had an assist in the game.
Blacksburg goalie Michael Releford played the entire game and made six saves.
Matoaca's Mason Page was the East MVP.
GIRLS SOCCER
East 3, West 2
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Cosby High School's Becca Wann scored on a header off a corner kick with about 10 minutes left as the East stars edged the West in the VHSCA girls soccer all-star game at Christopher Newport University.
The 6-foot-1 Wann, who is going to the University of Richmond on a half-scholarship for basketball and a half-scholarship for soccer, scored the East's first goal of the game on a header off of a corner kick.
She assisted on the second goal and was named the East MVP.
Both West goals were scored by Robinson High teammates Audrey Berry and Jensen Smith, who will be Wann's teammate at Richmond.
Berry, who is going to William and Mary, was named the West MVP.
VOLLEYBALL
East 3, West 2
HAMPTON, Va. -- Rachel Smith of Cox and Caroline Ford from Kellam played significant roles in helping the East rally for a 15-25, 25-18, 9-25, 25-20, 15-12 victory over the West in the VHSCA volleyball all-star game at the Boo Williams Complex.
All-Tidewater setter Smith, who plans to play club volleyball at the University of Virginia, totaled five service points, 10 assists and four digs. Middle hitter Ford, who will pursue club volleyball at Virginia Tech, recorded eight kills, including the match winner, and had three blocks.
Seth Sullivan from Chancellor was named East MVP.
The West, which saw its losing streak grow to six matches in VHSCA play, was led by MVP Nicole Bennett from Loudoun Valley.
Bath County's Hillary Jessee, who was among a contingent of Timesland players, finished with six digs, five kills and an assist. Hidden Valley's Samantha Klostermann had 10 digs, a block and five kills and Samantha Ringer, also of Hidden Valley, was credited with 10 kills, two digs and two blocks.
