East sweeps All-Star basketball games
HAMPTON, Va. -- Petersburg's Du'Vaughn Maxwell nearly had a triple-double to lead the East All-Stars to a 98-73 victory over the West on Tuesday night in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star boys basketball game at Hampton Coliseum.
The 6-foot-6 Maxwell, who is going to High Point (N.C.) University, finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots and was named the East most valuable player.
The East led 26-15 after the first quarter.
Twin Valley's Josh Smith was the West MVP with 17 points.
James River guard Ethan Humphries led the Timesland contingent on the West team with 10 points. William Byrd's Jake Mankin and Patrick Henry's Ronnie Thomas had five points apiece. PH's Melvin Henderson and Adam Burroughs of Northside finished with four points apiece.
Turner Ashby's Kirby Burkholder paced the West with 15 points in an 88-81 loss to the East in the girls game.
Lancaster's Andrea White scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the East. Hampton's Debbie Smith added 16 points and Greensville County's Gabby Tyler added 13.
The girls contest was a one-point game with about two minutes to play, but the East hit a 3-pointer and scored a couple of quick transition buckets to pull away.
Behind Burkholder, Spotwood's Carter Williams scored 13 points. Fairfax's Lauren Burford had 12 points and Potomac's Kyana Jacobs 11.
Hidden Valley's Kayla Osborne led the Timesland players on the West squad in the girls game with seven points. Chilhowie's Krystal Patton and Kayla Goins of Carroll County added six points apiece. Ti'Asia McGeorge of William Fleming chipped in three, while Bassett's Julia Scales contributed one.
