Pulaski County, Liberty split two
DUBLIN -- Pulaski County's Cody Long smashed a three-run home run in the second inning of the first game of a Saturday doubleheader against Liberty and the Cougars (2-2) never looked back in a five-inning 8-3 victory over the Minutemen (1-2).
Liberty returned the favor in the second game, defeating Pulaski County 11-3.
Long, a freshman, also picked up the win on the mound in the first game for the Cougars and added a two-run single in the fourth. Dustin Dalton contributed a pair of hits for Pulaski County.
Liberty scored all of its runs in the top of the fifth inning.
In the second game, the Minutemen jumped out to an early lead with seven runs in the second inning.
Dustin Dalton led the Cougars at the plate with two hits.
BASEBALL
Blacksburg 12-5, Patrick Henry 1-4
The visiting Bruins (2-0) swept both games of a doubleheader. In the opener, Blacksburg pitcher Ricky Sowers struck out eight and allowed just two hits in a complete-game effort.
In the second game, Blacksburg's Trevor Bennett had an RBI single that tied the game at 4 and later scored the winning run. Brad Sower hit a two-run home run and Cameron King had an RBI single for the Patriots (0-3).
Hidden Valley 4, Bassett 3
Alex Liechty's RBI double gave Hidden Valley a 2-1 lead and the Titans survived a late rally.
Liechty finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Logan Blankenbeckler had two hits for the Titans (1-1).
Patrick Martin led the Bengals (0-2) with three hits, including a two run-homer in the seventh.
Franklin County 33, Freedom 0
WOODBRIDGE -- The Eagles (3-1) rolled in five innings, posting a no-hitter with a number of different pitchers in their second game of the day Dylan Layman led Franklin County with a pair of home runs. Layman finished 4-for-4 at the plate with six RBIs and four runs scored.
Franklin County 8, Hylton 7
WOODBRIDGE -- Trey Heatwole drove in the game-winning run in the top of seventh inning.
Prior to that, Gary Goad, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs on the day, tied the game with a double.
Radford 15, Fort Chiswell 12
RADFORD -- Drew Cox led the Bobcats (1-0) with two doubles and five RBIs on Thursday.
Softball
Liberty 9-3, Blacksburg 2-0
BEDFORD -- Host Liberty (3-0) swept Blacksburg (0-2) in a doubleheader. In the opener, Ashley DeLong went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs for Liberty.
In the second game, Brady Lacy went 2-for-2 for Liberty. Kelly Glover added a triple.
BOYS SOCCER
Salem 2, Northside 0
Johnny Hughes and Patrick Pagans scored for Salem in its victory on Friday.
Frank Cox 2, Blacksburg 1
Dehmeh Smith scored the Bruins (0-1) lone goal.
GIRLS SOCCER
Staunton River 1, Liberty 0
BEDFORD -- Jodi Salyer scored in the first minute to lead the Golden Ealges (2-0) on Friday.
Gar-Field 1, Franklin County 0
DALE CITY -- Yohanna Flores scored for the Indians with 12 minutes left in the game. Crissy Moran had six saves for the Eagles.
Blacksburg 8, Patrick Henry 0
Rebecca Cornelius and Gracie Simms each posted three goals and an assist for Blacksburg (1-0).
