Vikings top Patriots

Northside's Patrick Arnold struck out seven and allowed just one hit in four innings of work in the Vikings' 14-10 victory over Patrick Henry on Friday.

Arnold also got it done at the plate, recording four hits to go along with three RBIs.

The Vikings (2-1) jumped out to a 11-0 lead, but Patrick Henry (0-1) rallied with nine runs in the fifth.

Chad Osterhaus and Brad Sowers each drove in three runs during the Patriots' spurt.

BASEBALL

North Cross 20, Roanoke Catholic 0

Spence Shaft went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, leading North Cross.

Sam Lawrence struck out 12 for North Cross. Lawrence also drove in four runs at the plate.

Criag Hoelzer and Fuller Clark both went 3-for-5 and had four RBIs for North Cross.

Fort Chiswell 12, Floyd County 5

FLOYD -- Mike Dunford and Gabe Ayers both went 2-for-4 to lead Fort Chiswell. Parker Mabe was the winning pitcher for the Pioneers. Floyd County's Tyler Carr went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Fort Chiswell scored seven runs in the fourth inning to break the tie.

Staunton River 7, Liberty 5

BEDFORD -- Jared Nickols went 2-for-2 and scored two runs for Staunton River (3-0). Trevor Cheek drove in two runs for Liberty (0-10.

Patrick County 8, Carroll County 1

STUART -- Daniel Leviner got things started for the Cougars (3-0) with a two-run homer in the first inning.

Dillon Hall followed with a solo shot in the third inning.

Jacob Reynolds added a pair of triples and scored twice, while Parker Heath knocked a two-run triple in the victory.

Narrows 16, Eastern Montgomery 8 (5 innings)

ELLISTON -- Narrows pitcher Jake Craft led the Green Wave with a double and a single in a game called after five innings due to darkness.

Craft pitched for the first four innings and totaled nine strikeouts.

Julian Stewart led EastMont with two hits.

Glenvar 5, James River 3

Eddy Kasper and Trent Wilburn had back-to-back RBIs to give Glenvar the lead over James River (1-2) in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Both Kasper and Wilburn had two hits each to lead the Highlanaders (1-2).

Tyler Duke had a home run for James River and Ryan Hepler totaled two hits.

Todd Dunbar pitched two innings for Glenvar and had six strikeouts.

Riverheads 6, Parry McCluer 0

STAUNTON -- Cody Montgomery went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a three-run home run in the fourth to lead Riverheads.

Derek Bennington also went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Jeremy McDaniel pitched the complete game for Parry McCluer, striking out eight and allowing just six hits.

Softball

James River 1, Glenvar 0

Heather Cook's triple in the sixth inning scored Dee Seeman for the game's only run.

Patrick County 2, Carroll County 1

STUART -- Haley Wilson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for Patrick County (2-0)

The Cougars' Brittany Stovall pitched seven innings, striking out 11 without walking a batter.

Eastern Montgomery 14, Narrows 0

NARROWS -- Amber Yerg struck out and allowed only one hit for Eastern Montgomery (2-0)

Holly Lambert led the Mustangs with three hits and three RBIs.

Patrick Henry 5, Floyd County 3

FLOYD -- Grace Putney led Patrick Henry with two hits.

Hannah Alderman picked up the victory for the Patriots on the mound, striking out 15 while allowing just three hits.

Alexis Roop had a solo home run for Floyd, and Amber Ingram had two hits.

Liberty 13, Staunton River 0

BEDFORD -- Liberty (1-0) blanked Staunton River with help from Heather Maniaf, who went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs. Starting freshman Cassidy Hensley pitched a one hitter and had 14 strikeouts for Liberty.

BOYS SOCCER

Hidden Valley 4, William Byrd 0

Will Gooding totaled two goals and an assist to lead the Titans (2-0). Hidden Valley's two wins equal its total from last season. Sebastian Lopez and Evan Dermott also scored for the Titans. Eric Kessler had two saves in goal.

Bassett 2, Franklin County 1

ROCKY MOUNT -- Matt Chitwood netted the game-winner in the 78th minute, giving Bassett its first-ever win over Franklin County. Misael Sanchez also scored for the Bengals (2-0).

Jacob McCullouch scored the lone goal for Franklin County.

Frank Cox 3, Patrick Henry 1

Nick Lasky scored the lone goal for the Patriots (1-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

Lord Botetourt 1, Radford 0

Ashlie Caldwell scored the game's only goal for the Cavaliers (3-0). Kristyn Rogan recorded 12 saves for Lord Botetourt.

Stafford 2, Franklin County 2

FREDERICKSBURG -- Victoria Bruce scored twice to give Franklin County (0-0-1) a tie in its opener.

Boys' lacrosse

Rockbridge Co. 11, James River-Richmond 9

LEXINGTON -- Stefan Walz scored six goals for Rockbridge County.

Salem 18, South County 5

Marykelsey Cotter had eight goals, Kerri Bain scored four and Sarah Hakkenberg and Taylor Tate had two goals apiece to lead the Spartans on Thursday.
