High school sports roundup: Terriers shut out Spartans in softball

Jessica Mahoney's 12-strikeout, two-hit performance led William Byrd to the 2-0 victory over Salem.

Danielle Powell had a run scoring single in the sixth inning, while both Jordan Maedor and Jamie Green each had doubles for the Terriers.

Softball

Craig County 4, Giles 2

NEW CASTLE -- Sarah Wood went 2-for-4 and drove in a run in a four-run fifth inning for Craig County, which trailed 2-0 heading into the fifth.

Brittany Ratliff went 2-for-4 with two doubles, while Shawna Huffman had a a hit in each of her three at-bats. Nicole Craft struck out 11 batters for Craig County.

Megan Fisher was 2-for-3 for Giles County.

Covington 13, Roanoke Catholic 0

Shanna Woodward pitched a no-hitter, striking out 19 batters, for Covington (1-1).

Ashleigh Brie went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Kristina Huffman went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Carroll County 9, Pulaski County 2

HILLSVILLE -- Autumn Heal drove in two runs and scored twice for Carroll County, while Amber Cannaday went 2-for-4 with two runs and two doubles.

Lily Kimble recorded the win for the Cavaliers, pitching seven innings, striking out nine.

Bath County 10, Alleghany 2

LOW MOOR -- Jalen Ford allowed two runs and struck out 12 batters for Bath County (2-0) in its win over Alleghany (1-1).

Ford also had a triple for the Chargers, who also got two hits from Amanda Shiflett. Kristen Rose went 2-for-3 with a triple for Alleghany.

Baseball

Giles 7, Craig County 3

PEARISBURG -- Andrew Eppling's two-run double in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie. Eppling scored on a throwing error on the play to give Giles a 6-3 lead.

Heath Wilson earned the win for Giles, going five innings and allowing two earned runs. Tyler Thorne got the save, pitching two scoreless innings.

Auburn 10, Galax 1

GALAX -- Jacob Underwood pitched a complete game three-hitter to lead Galax (1-1) to the win.

The only run Underwood gave up was unearned. He struck out eight batters and also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Shane Cummings went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Galax (1-1).

Salem 7, William Byrd 6

Carter Williamson hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth to give Salem (1-1) the one-run lead.

Dustin Garst had two hits, including a three-run home run for the Spartans and Matt Hill earned the win.

For William Byrd (1-1), Raymond Harron hit a two-run home run and Joe Stickney had two hits and two RBIs.

BOYS SOCCER

Staunton River 3, Liberty 1

MONETA -- Kyle Hicks, Alex Cowen and Ian Campbell each scored goals for Staunton River (1-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

Salem 5, William Byrd 1

Claire Sexton totaled two goals and an assist and Harmon Hall added one of each to lead Salem (2-0).

Hannah Chauvin and Katelin Campbell each had one goal for the Spartans.

Laura Wood scored the Goal for William Byrd (0-1-1) and Hanna Henley recorded 22 saves for the Terriers.

Floyd County 5, George Wythe 0

FLOYD -- Caroline Blevins scored three times and assisted on another goal for Floyd County (1-0).

The Buffaloes, who limited George Wythe (0-1) to six shots, also got goals from Jordan Nolen and Abbie Priest. Priest added an assist.

North Cross 2, SWVA Home School 0

Regan Comer scored in the 33rd minute and Hallie Martin added a goal late in the second half for North Cross (2-0) in the win over SW Virginia Home School (0-1-1). Elizabeth Stoekle recorded the shutout for the Raiders.
