BASEBALL

Pulaski County 16, Giles 0, 5 innings

PEARISBURG -- Brad Reno had three hits, including a double and home run, and Tyler Frazier allowed three hits and struck out six over four innings for the Cougars (1-0).

Galax 10, Floyd County 9, 8 innings

GALAX -- Galax's Michael Bond was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the host Maroon Tide (1-1) the victory.

Bond was 2-for-2 at the plate and scored three runs. He also picked up the win on the mound after two innings of relief.

Travis Garvey had three hits and four RBIs for Galax.

Andrew Poff was 3-for-5 with two doubles for the Buffaloes (0-1).

Northside 7, Hidden Valley 6

The host Vikings posted a seven-run fourth inning to top the Titans in the season opener for both teams.

Hidden Valley led 4-0 going into the bottom half of the fourth inning. Northside's Patrick Arnold belted a three-run home run in the decisive inning.

Tyler Goodman totaled two hits and drove in a run for Northside. Quintin Otey picked up the one-out save in the seventh inning with the bases loaded.

Christiansburg 8, Bassett 1

CHRISTIANSBURG-- Seth Martin and Winston Bond combined for the one-hit shutout for Christiansburg (1-0).

Martin started and struck out nine in four innings, giving up the lone Bassett (0-1) hit. Bond struck out three in three innings.

Phillip Batista had a three-run double in Christianburg's six-run first inning.

Alleghany 5, Glenvar 3

LOW MOOR -- Jarrod Groves and Jacob Vaughn each had two hits as Alleghany improved to 2-0.

Seth Bradley earned the win for the Mountaineers. Groves scored on a Glenvar (0-2) wild pitch in the fifth inning that proved to be the difference.

Chilhowie 5, Marion 3

CHILHOWIE -- In his first career game, freshman Forrest Haga earned the win for Chilhowie (1-0), going six innings and striking out five batters.

Scott Pennington went 2-for-2 for the Warriors with a fifth inning RBI single. Daniel Ashby hit a solo homer in the sixth for Chilhowie.

Ronnie Funk had an RBI double and scored a run for Marion (0-1).

Lord Botetourt 12, Salem 4

Dylan Powers had two home runs and four RBIs for the Cavaliers (2-0) on Tuesday.

Lord Botetourt scored seven times in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie.

Alex Stepp had a two-run single for Salem (0-1).

Zach Harth had a triple for the Spartans and Jonathan Alabran had a single and double.

Franklin County 10, Cave Spring 3

Dillon Layman allowed one run and struck out two batters to earn the win for Franklin County (1-1).

Javen Metx went 3-for-5 with a home run and Casey Naff went 4-for-4 for the Eagles.

Steven Cole was 2-for-3 with a homer for Cave Spring (0-1).

Chance Witt pitched five innings in relief, striking out four and allowing a run to win his first game of the year.

Boys soccer

Bassett 2, Christiansburg 1

CHRISTIANSBURG -- Misael Sanchez and Jose Avila scored second half goals for Bassett (2-0). Mohammed Issa's first half goal gave Christiansburg the lead.

William Fleming 5, Magna Vista 1

Jesus Soria scored two goals, including the game winner late in the first half for Fleming (1-0) on Monday. Godson Kamandala, Abdu Abdullahi, and Miguel Parra also scored for the Colonels.

Patrick Henry 3, E.C. Glass 2

LYNCHBURG -- Ryan Landis, Nick Spurlock and Robert Bear scored goals for the visiting Patriots (1-0).

Cameron Chavira had two assists.

Remington Hinshaw made 10 saves for Patrick Henry.

E.C. Glass fell to 0-1.

Hidden Valley 7, Northside 0

Hidden Valley (1-0) got goals from Mark Strelow, Tyler Blankenship, Kevin Draudt, Torre Swope, Sebastian Lopez, Tim Radford, and Evan Dermott.

Pulaski County 3, Graham 1

PULASKI -- Dustin Bain totaled a goal and an assist for the host Cougars (1-0).

Ethan Walter and Zan Yopp also scored goals for Pulaski County.

Lord Botetourt 3, Salem 3

DALEVILLE -- Lord Botetourt battled back from an early 3-1 deficit to earn a 3-3 tie with Salem. Conner McBain scored the tying goal in the first half for the Cavaliers and finished with two goals. Eric Imhoff also scored for the Cavaliers.

Brett Crocker had three assists for Lord Botetourt, while Johnny Hughes scored twice for the Spartans. Chris Cook also scored a goal for Salem.

Softball

Roanoke Catholic 7-9, Eastern Mennonite 6-14

Roanoke Catholic (1-1) and Eastern Mennonite (1-1) split a double-header, with Roanoke Catholic winning the first game 7-6 and Eastern Mennonite the second 14-9.

In the first game, Eva Perez struck out seven batters for the Celtics, while Kat Leonard went 3-for-4.

In the second game, both Caitlin Powell and Molly Wharton went 3-for-4 for Roanoke Catholic.

Staunton River 13, Heritage 0

Amanda Ferguson pitched a three-hit shutout for the visiting Golden Eagles (1-0).

Sarah Mayhew added two hits for Staunton River.

Northside 2, Hidden Valley 1

Kelsey Jarett picked up the victory and Lauren Boitnott got the save for the visiting Vikings (2-0).

Amber Brooks had a single and scored a run for Northside.

Kathleen Carr totaled two hits and an RBI for Hidden Valley.

Girls soccer

Staunton River 5, James River 0

MONETA -- Jodi Salyer scored three goals and added an assist for Staunton River (2-0).

Katie Brown added a goal and assist and Lauren Farmer a goal for the Golden Eagles who led 3-0 at halftime.

Hidden Valley 4, Northside 1

Claire Sibley scored the first two goals for Hidden Valley (1-0), while Taylor Patterson added the second two.

Lindsey McDole made four saves for the Titans, who led 3-1 at halftime. Northside had 10 saves.

Cave Spring 1, Radford 0

Loreto Alarcon scored in the 70th minute for the host Knights (1-0). Cave Spring goalie Laurel Markey made 15 saves for the shutout.

Patrick County 3, Carroll County 0

STUART -- Katie Kipreos scored a goal and added two assists to lead Patrick County to the win. Sarah Puckett and Lizzy Leaper also scored for the Cougars.

Christiansburg 5, Bassett 1

BASSETT -- Sigrid Ebbesen scored twice and added an assist for Christiansburg (2-0). Freshmen Shannon Stuart and Hannah Duff each scored a goal as did senior Mallory Foster.

Lord Botetourt 6, Liberty 0

BEDFORD -- Hollie Martin scored three times and Macey Tyree twice for Lord Botetourt (1-0). Kristyn Brogan and Mariah Martin combined for the shutout.

Boys lacrosse

Salem 16, South County 1

Will Bader had four goals and four assists, while Ian Robertson had four goals and an assist for Salem. Matt Robertson stopped six shots for Salem.

Will Pilat had South County's goal.
