Hokies win Pinehurst title

PINEHURST, N.C. --Mikey Moyers finished in second place and Virginia Tech overcame a two-stroke deficit to Penn State to win the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Sunday.

Moyers was 2-under for the tournament.

Radford, which finished 10th, had two players end up in the top 10 -- Kyle Bailey (James River) tied for third, and Wade Wawner finished eighth.

GOLF

UVa's Nielson gets 2nd

NEW ORLEANS -- Led by Calle Nielson's 3-under 69, Virginia finished fifth at the Tiger/Wave Classic.

Nielson was second overall.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Hokie wins platform

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Virginia Tech freshman Logan Shinholser won the platform event at the Zone A Diving Championships on Sunday and joined teammate Mikey McDonald in qualifying for the NCAA championships, which will be March 25-27 in Columbus, Ohio.

BASEBALL

Va. Tech 8, Maryland 4

BLACKSBURG --Buddy Sosniskie had three hits and two RBIs, and Mathew Price allowed just eight hits and four earned runs to help the Hokies (11-4, 2-1 ACC) take two of three over the Terrapins (6-8, 1-2).

Florida St. 9, Virginia 8

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Tyler Holt hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Seminoles (13-2, 1-2 ACC) their first conference win.

Virginia (12-3, 2-1) still won a series against the Seminoles for the first time ever.

VMI 11, La Salle 1

LEXINGTON -- Graham Sullivan and Jordan Ballard homered, and Sam Roberts allowed no runs over seven innings as the Keydets (14-1) earned a weekend sweep of the Explorers (1-11).

Radford sweeps Rider

RADFORD -- The Highlanders (6-7) scored in their last at-bats and took two games from Rider (5-6) to sweep the three-game series.

In Game 1, the Highlanders won 4-3 when Robert Lamas squeeze bunt scored Phil Bondi in the bottom of the ninth.

In Game 2, Reggie Keen hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth (the game only went 8 innings) to give RU a 1-0 win.

Ferrum 11, Averett 10

FERRUM -- Justin Franklin hit a double and two homers to lead the Panthers (10-2, 2-1 USA South) over Averett (15-6, 3-1).

SOFTBALL

Maroons win three

Roanoke (12-1) ran its winning streak to 11 by winning three games at the Moyer Complex.

The Maroons beat Peace 7-2, Piedmont 2-1 and UVa-Wise 3-0.

Leona Rainey had seven hits, including three doubles over the weekend. She also stole four bases.

Ferrum splits in Salem

The Panthers (7-7) lost to Baruch (N.Y.) College 2-1, then came back to beat Eastern Mennonite 3-0 in a pair of games played at the Moyer Sports Complex. Hannah Shumaker had two hits and an RBI in the win .

UVa sweeps Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Virginia softball team (12-9, 2-0 ACC) got two strong outings from pitcher Melanie Mitchell and swept Maryland (10-9, 0-2) by scores of 5-3 and 3-1.

In the second game, Mitchell allowed eight hits and one earned run with four strikeouts.

Radford 6, Indiana 4

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Radford (7-8) scored five in the sixth inning to rally to beat the Hoosiers in the USF Showcase.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Salisbury 21, Roanoke 7

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Sea Gulls (7-0) led 13-2 at the half.

Gina Valles had two goals and an assist for the Maroons (1-3).

TRACK AND FIELD

Radford's Veatch, Morse win hammer at Coastal

CONWAY, S.C. -- Ex-Cave Spring student Aimee Veatch won the hammer throw at the Coastal Carolina Invitational with a toss of 182 feet, 3 inches.

Kyle Morse won the men's hammer with a toss of 208-0.

Lori Crotts (Craig County) broke the school record in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:14.76).
