A parade in downtown Buchanan honors the James River boys basketball team on Sunday, a day after the Knights defeated Buckingham County to claim the VHSL Group A Division 2 boys basketball title.
RICHMOND -- Lukas Mihailovich scored five of his 33 points in the second overtime late Saturday night to lead Potomac Falls past Broadway 69-64 in the Group AA Division 4 boys championship.
The Panthers (25-2) hit 8 of 10 free throws during the final 1:59 of the game to seal their first state title.
Brendon Chesson's jumper for Potomac Falls with 30.5 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime. Adam Caplinger's free throw for Broadway with 1.8 seconds left in the first extra period extended the game again.
Broadway (21-7), which won its only state title in 1926, led 29-23 after the first half.
Chesson scored 11 points for Potomac Falls, and Gregory Graves had eight points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks.
Chris Knight led the Gobblers with 19 points, nine in the overtime periods. Nick Fulk added 15 points, 12 in the first half, and Kyle VanOrden had 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Buchanan honors state champion Knights
Although some last-minute changes had to be made, James River's boys basketball team that beat Buckingham County in Saturday's Group A Division 2 championship game was honored with a parade on Sunday afternoon.
The team was originally going to be escorted by Buchanan's new fire engine and tanker, but an emergency call came in on a structure fire, forcing firemen and their equipment into duty.
The Knights players and cheerleaders were still paraded throughout town on the town's ladder truck, and a reception -- complete with speeches from school officials and local politicians -- was held in front the fire house. Word also arrived during the event that the fire fighters were able to save the structure.
