High school basketball roundup: Millbrook tops Greensville County for state title

RICHMOND -- Courtni Green scored 31 points and had eight steals Saturday, leading Millbrook to a 49-38 victory against Greensville County and its first VHSL Group AA Division 3 girls championship.

Millbrook (22-0), last year's runner-up, missed its first 12 shots and 26 of 33 in the first half, but trailed only 22-17 at halftime. Green then scored 11 points during a 13-4 burst to start the third quarter and the Pioneers never trailed again.

Gabriel Tyler led Greensville County (27-1) with 16 points and 18 rebounds. The Eagles led 16-6 with 5:21 left in the half, but Green scored 11 points in the final 4:09 of the half.

Green, only a sophomore, also scored her 1,000th career point during the game.

Kerris Doyle added 13 points for the Eagles.

George Mason 58, Lancaster 47

RICHMOND -- Nicole Mitchell scored 11 of her 13 points in the first period, boosting George Mason to a lead it never lost, and the Mustangs cruised past Lancaster to win their second straight Group A Division 2 girls championship.

Chantal Thomas led the winners with 18 points, while Mitchell also contributed 14 rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Mustangs (23-2), who won the title for the third time.

Freedom 68, Spotswood 44

RICHMOND -- Kelsey Buchanan, the defending Group AA player of the year, scored 25 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked nine shots to lead Freedom-South Riding past Spotswood in the Group AA Division 4 girls championship.

Alexis Mayo scored four points during a 9-0 first-quarter run, and Buchanan scored four during a 9-2 second-quarter run for the Eagles (21-5), who led 30-16 at halftime.

The Trail Blazers (20-7), vying for their first title since 1983, didn't get any closer than 12 points in the second half.
