High school wrestling/swimming: Demons lead after day 1

CHRISTIANSBURG -- Eight-time defending Group AA champion Christiansburg advanced 11 wrestlers to the semifinals and held a 125 12 - 111 12 lead over second-place Grundy after Friday's first day of the Region IV wrestling tournament at Christiansburg High School.

Wrestlers from Christiansburg and Grundy will meet in 10 a.m. semifinal matches today at 125, 130, 135, 140 and 145 pounds.

Hidden Valley is third in the team standings with 79 points with Cave Spring fourth at 59 12.

The championship finals are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

WRESTLING

Galax on top at Region C

BUENA VISTA -- Galax sent nine wrestlers to the semifinals and built a 98 12-81 lead over second-place Glenvar after the first day of the tournament at Parry McCluer High School.

Defending Group A champion Glenvar has eight wrestlers in today's semifinals.

James River is in third place with 64 points, Chilhowie is in fourth with 58 and Radford sits in fifth with 48 12.

Turner Ashby leads at Region III

BRIDGEWATER -- Host Turner Ashby flexed its muscles and rolled up a 100-86 lead over second-place Brookville after the first day of the tournament.

Staunton River stands third heading into today's semifinals and finals with 70 points, followed by Jefferson Forest with 69, Broadway with 68 and Northside with 56.

SWIMMING

Wythe girls, Radford boys win Region C

George Wythe held off defending champion James River 258-251 to win the girls division and Radford repeated as boys champion in the Group A Region C swim meet at the Gator Pool in Roanoke.

Radford swamped Wythe 284-141 to win the boys meet.

The top three individuals, as well as swimmers with state qualifying times, qualified for the Group AA/A meet next weekend at Old Dominion in Norfolk.
