High school basketball: Mabe rescues Pioneers late

MAX MEADOWS -- Parker Mabe hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, then he and Hody Viars hit shots to push Fort Chiswell ahead, as the Pioneers held on to beat Galax 94-87 in a Mountain Empire District thriller.

Viars led Fort Chiswell with 22 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Mabe had 20 points and Jared Smith had 17 points and four steals. Morgan Dean added 11 points.

Justin Hash led Galax with 33 points. Deion George scored 18 and Devoe Goins added 15.

DUBLIN -- The Titans made eight out of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to escape with a district win.

Tyler Evans led Hidden Valley with 12 points, while Kayla Osborne added 11 and Lindsey Divers pitched in 10.

Pulaski led by as many as eight points in the third quarter, but the Cougars were just 1-for-6 from the foul line in the final period.

Raven Patterson scored a game-high 16 points for the Cougars.

BEDFORD -- Kiki Jones nailed a 3-pointer with less than a minute left to give the Minettes the lead and ultimately the victory.

Brandie Whitt finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, leading Liberty in both categories.

Liberty erased a six-point halftime deficit with a strong fourth quarter.

Christina Phillips scored 11 points for Heritage.

Carlyta Hamm had 18 points and 19 rebounds, Michelle Whitt added 17 points and Sarah Whisman 11 for Fort Chiswell.

Bailey Shumate paced Galax with 15 points. Allison White added 12.
