Northside's boys clinch district

Northside's boys basketball team used a pressure defense to force 24 turnovers in the first half on their way to a 90-46 win over visiting Lord Botetourt on Thursday that clinched Blue Ridge District championship and a No. 1 seed in regionals.

Neil Brown scored 14 points and Trey Smith added 12 for the Vikings.

Daulton Hargrove led the Cavaliers with 10 points.

BLACKSBURG -- Katy Kipps scored on a put-back with less than 10 seconds to play, giving Blacksburg a win in the River Ridge District.

Kipps finished the game with 10 points and eight rebounds. Lacey McMahan scored 17 for the Bruins, who outrebounded Pulaski County 19-8 in the second half.

Raiven Patterson's 13 points were a high for Pulaski County.

Down 19-4 after the first quarter, the Highlanders cut the lead down to five points in the fourth quarter but were forced to foul to try to catch up and Pattison nailed eight straight free throws to put the game away.

The game was held at Glenvar Middle School because of a leak at the high school.

Western Valley District

ROCKY MOUNT -- Franklin County won it's 23rd straight district championship and nine straight Western Valley District titles with 240 points.

The Eagles also set a district record with 12 individual champions

Three Rivers District

Glenvar had seven wrestlers take individual titles to lead the Highlanders to the district championship with a total of 202 12 points.

Radford had four individual champions and came in second with 155 12 points.

Floyd County finished third with 125 points.

District Meets

Western Valley District

Thomas Girani and Margaret Parcell each won a pair of events as Franklin County swept the boys and girls team titles in the Western Valley swim meet Thursday at Salem YMCA.

Girani won the 200 IM (2:16.84) and 500 free (5:30.98) as Franklin County outscored Halifax County 137-129. Patrick Henry's Tim Potter won the 50 free (24.39) and 100 free (55.80), while Trey McGraw captured the 100 backstroke (57.61) and 200 free (1:53.11) for the Patriots.

Franklin County's girls edged Patrick Henry 135-123 as Parcell swept the 100 butterfly (1:02.89) and 100 free (56.74).

Blue Ridge District

Bobby Brajdic won two events to lead Lord Botetourt to the boys title, and Kacy Edsall captured a pair as William Byrd claimed the girls crown in the Blue Ridge District swim meet Wednesday at Gator Aquatic Center.

Brajdic won the 200 IM (2:06.78) and 500 free (5:05.27) as Botetourt outpointed Staunton River 160-146, while Northside's Logan Altizer took the 200 free (2:03.76) and the 100 breast (1:14.16). Staunton River's Jordan Dehli won the 50 free (23.35) and 100 free (53.01), and teammate C.P. Dehli took the 100 fly (54.84) and 100 back (58.77).

Byrd nipped Northside 148-141 in the girls meet as Edsall won the 50 free (25.53) and 100 fly (1:00.01), Northside's Victoria Mesner swept the 200 IM (2:27.78) and 500 free (5:30.17), while Botetourt's Mackenzie Lingle won the 200 free (2:06.82) and 100 free (58.44).
