High school notebook: Fleming's Stovall earns scholarship
ReadIn here and here and here 4 decks.
William Fleming had two boys basketball players sign a Division I scholarship last spring.
Score one for the girls.
Fleming's Salesse Stovall, a 6-foot-1 power forward/center, signed papers Wednesday with Marshall, becoming the first Timesland girl in the 2010 graduating class to earn a D-I grant-in-aid.
Stovall said she chose Marshall over offers from Stony Brook, North Carolina Central, UNC Greensboro and Maryland-Baltimore County.
Stovall said Marshall viewed her during open gymnasiums this fall after receiving her highlight tape.
"They called me two weeks ago and set up an official visit," the Fleming senior said. "We went up there last weekend. They sat down with us and said they would be sending me the papers to sign in the mail."
Stovall helped lead Fleming to a 13-10 record as junior. She also played for Team Virginia's 16-under Navy team that won two national tournaments this spring and summer under the direction of Randy Dunton, a former Liberty University men's head coach.
"She made a lot of progress playing in a system where the offense wasn't geared toward her," Fleming coach Champ Hubbard said. "That really helped her out a lot. Much respect goes to Randy Dunton."
Stovall spent three years at Roanoke Catholic and attended Franklin County briefly during her freshman year before transferring to Fleming.
Hubbard said Stovall is very capable of playing away from the basket at the next level.
"She has a perimeter game she hasn't used much yet," Hubbard said.
Samantha Webster of William Byrd and Brittany Bourne of Floyd County are headed to NCAA Division II schools.
Webster, a 5-11 post player who also plays volleyball, has committed to Concord (W.Va.). Bourne, a 5-11 forward/center has signed with Tusculum (Tenn.).
VHSL R&R committee urges Rockbridge move
The VHSL's Redistricting and Reclassification committee has recommended that Rockbridge County return to the Blue Ridge District -- where the Wildcats were members until 2001 -- in all sports beginning with the 2011-12 school year.
The R&R committee has proposed that the Southern Valley District be dissolved in 2011.
Rockbridge would join current Blue Ridge members Alleghany, Lord Botetourt, Northside, Staunton River and William Byrd in a six-team district if the proposal passes.
Current Southern Valley members Stuarts Draft and Wilson Memorial would drop to the Group A Shenandoah District.
The remaining Southern Valley schools -- Fort Defiance, R.E. Lee-Staunton and Waynesboro -- would join current Massanutten District members Broadway, Harrisonburg, Spotswood and Turner Ashby in a reconfigured Valley District.
None of the R&R recommendations are final. Schools and districts have until Jan. 19 to file appeals. The final appeals meeting will take place in Charlottesville in April. The Executive Committee will finalize all assignments for 2011-12 during a meeting May 6.
Rockbridge County athletic director David Miller said the school administration will study a potential move.
"We're all still just talking about it," Miller said. "Today was the first we'd heard anything about it."
Miller said factors influencing whether Rockbridge might appeal include travel and scheduling. A negative to moving to the Blue Ridge could be a potential move by that district to Region IV in the future, Miller said.
