Marion moving on after rout of visiting Grundy

MARION -- Brett Johnson totaled 165 yards and scored four total touchdowns to lead Marion (8-3) to a 38-12 victory over Grundy in the Region IV Division 3 football playoffs Friday night at Marion High School.

Johnson scored on runs of 50, 33 and 42 yards and also had a 65-yard punt return for the game's first score.

Marion's defense held Grundy (6-5) to just two rushing yards on 23 carries.

Marion plays at Richlands next week.

AMHERST -- Deshon Foxx had a 2-yard touchdown run with 40 seconds left to give the Bees a win in the Region III Division 3 playoffs at Amherst County High School.

Down 16-6, the Bees (9-2) scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes. Seth Bradley threw for a TD and ran for a TD for Alleghany (6-5). Brookville will visit Northside next week.

Rural Retreat 44, Covington 20

COVINGTON -- Zayne Williams ran for two scores and tossed a touchdown pass as the Indians (4-7) advanced to the Region C Division 1 semifinals. Adam Evans amassed 89 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Rural Retreat, which will play at Holston next week, exploded with 23 points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Keenan Smith had a 99-yard kickoff return for the Cougars (6-5).

PENN LAIRD -- Nick Wimer rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries and also caught a TD pass to lead the Trailblazers to victory in the Region III Division 4 playoffs. Spotswood (9-2) will visit Harrisonburg next week.

Cody Jones rushed for 110 yards and three TDs on 12 carries for the Golden Eagles (5-6).

Celtics finish 2nd at VIS state meet

WOODBERRY FOREST -- The Roanoke Catholic boys and girls both finished second at the Virginia Independent Schools Division II championships. In the girls meet, Julian Sorrentino was sixth (22:06.15), with Brennan Long 14th (22:44.28). In the boys meet, Douglass Beach was fourth (18:18.18), with Kit Mahoney 10th (19:01.73) and Cy Clemo 15th (19:10.87). All made all-state.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Roanoke Valley Christian 60, Faith Christian-Hurt 56

HURT -- Nathan Perkinson had 33 points and 13 rebounds to lead Roanoke Valley Christian to victory.
