Northside Vikings celebrate Blue Ridge District crown
Northside 51, Staunton River 26
MONETA -- Burt Torrence strode into the giggling, jostling postgame huddle and shoved the Blue Ridge District trophy into the hands of his waiting team.
"You earned this," Torrence said.
The Northside Vikings (8-2, 4-0) had earned it, their first district title since 2002, by capping off their regular season with an emphatic 51-26 win over host Staunton River on Friday night.
Dustin Phelps, finally in full bloom after being hampered by a nagging ankle injury most of the season, ran for three touchdowns -- the shortest of which was 30 yards -- and 188 yards.
"This was his breakout game," Torrence said of Phelps. "He's been hurt since the third game of the season. Tonight he was 100 percent for the first time."
Phelps' teammate Philip Scott ran for three more scores -- his shortest was 34 -- and 214 yards.
"Scott's been doing that all year," Torrence said. "He's a phenomenal back."
Quarterback Ryan Keith connected on only three passes, but one was a 47-yard touchdown strike to Tyler Fisher.
Phelps, Scott, Keith and the whole Vikings team got a boost from the return of offensive lineman Trent Cundiff, who had broken his ankle and thought his season was over.
The Northside line, Staunton River coach Rick Witt said, was literally a big reason the Vikings were able to roll up 554 yards of offense. Not that it was the only reason.
"They're big, they're fast, they're really, really good," Witt said.
While the Vikings were already assured a spot in the Region III Division 3 playoffs, Witt had some math to do after the game trying to figure out who won and lost and how many points each team had.
Thanks to strategic losses by other teams, Staunton River (5-5, 2-2 Blue Ridge) is the fifth seed in the Region III Division 4 playoffs, edging out sixth-seeded William Byrd by a single point. The Golden Eagles will travel to fourth-seeded Spotswood on Friday, while Byrd travels to third-seeded Turner Ashby.
Staunton River got three touchdowns from Wesley Gates, who caught nine of Cody Jones' passes for 191 yards and two scores and also returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown.
"He's the best player on their team," Torrence said of Gates. "We had a game plan for him and we still couldn't stop him."
Jones completed 11 of 21 passes for 201 yards and touchdowns of 44 and 72 yards to Gates. Bobby Hobbs also scored for the Golden Eagles, blocking a Vikings' field-goal attempt and returning the ball 67 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
