Cross country roundup

DANVILLE -- Patrick Henry's boys and girls teams dominated the field at Ballou Park with seven top-10 finishers in the boys division and seven more in the girls on Wednesday.

Franklin County's Melissa Peeple prevented the Patriots from grabbing all of the top awards. She scored a 12-second win over Anna Carson to win the girls individual district title.

Patrick Woodford of PH also won by 12 seconds, he outdistanced John Boitnott of Franklin County.

All of the boys teams except for Halifax County qualified for the Northwest Region meet. Since William Fleming did not field a girls team this year, all four teams who competed in the that race advanced to regionals.

THREE RIVERS DISTRICT

CROCKETT SPRINGS, Va. -- Austin Grubb and Andrew Grubb finished first and third to lead the Floyd County boys to the district title over second-place Radford at Camp Alta Mons.

Austin Grubb won the 3.1-mile race in 17 minutes, 19 seconds, followed closely by second-place finisher Jared Miller of Radford in 17:32.

Radford dominated the girls race, taking the top four spots and the team title. Radford's lone senior Amber Thompson led the way in 21:29.

Giles, Glenvar and Auburn finished in a three-way tie with 74 points. Giles' sixth-place runner Tara Myers was the tiebreaker, finishing 20th, two places ahead of Glenvar's sixth-place girl.

FOREST -- Jefferson Forest's brother-sister combination of Robert and Mary Deis won individual titles and led the Cavaliers to the team championship at Wolf Branch Farm.

Robert Deis finished in 17 minutes, 18 seconds to defeat teammate Todd tenPas by 18 seconds. Mary Deis won in 20:34, good for a nine-second margin over JF's Leigh Schimmoeller.

BUENA VISTA -- Bath County's Matt Persinger and Highland's Hayley Billingsley conquered the 3.1-mile course at Glen Maury Park to win individual titles, while the Covington boys and Craig County girls captured team.

Persinger won in 19 minutes, 17 seconds, while Billingsley won in 23:02.

HILLSVILLE -- Sophomores Travis Cockerham of Galax and Carley Smith of Grayson County claimed individual titles at Southwest Virginia Training Center.

Cockerham led Galax to its 19th team championship in 21 years with an 18:02 clocking. Grayson won the girls title as Smith edged defending champion Marleigh Durham of Galax by a full minute in 22:12.

BRISTOL -- George Wythe won the boys title, while Patrick Henry-Glade Spring cruised to the girls crown behind individual winner Krista McCray at Sugar Hollow Park.

PH's Skyler Carbery won the boys race in 17:18, edging Wythe's Owen Morgan. McCray's winning time of 20:00 was 1:17 faster than runner-up Deanna Hedgepath of Wythe.

STAUNTON -- Fort Defiance edged Rockbridge County for the boys title, while the Wildcats placed fourth behind champion Wilson Memorial in the girls standings to earn a berth in next week's Region III meet.
