High school notebook: Salem Kiwanis Valley Shootout lineup set

The Roanoke Times
File February Head boys basketball coach Billy Hicks (center) and the Cave Spring Knights will play Christ School (N.C.) on Feb. 6.
The Salem Kiwanis Valley Shootout keeps getting better and better.
This year's quadrupleheader boys basketball showcase -- including Timesland teams Cave Spring and Patrick Henry -- is set for Feb. 6 at Salem Civic Center and will be loaded with Division I recruits.
Here is this year's schedule:
-- Patrick Henry vs. Lake Norman, N.C., 3 p.m.
-- Hargrave (postgraduate) vs. Fishburne Military (postgraduate).
-- Oak Hill Academy vs. Miller School of Charlottesville.
-- Cave Spring vs. Christ School of Arden, N.C.
Spectators won't be able to count all the Division I prospects on both hands and feet.
Players who already have committed include Miller's 6-foot-6 Mychal Parker (Maryland), Oak Hill's 6-10 Baye Moussa Keita (Syracuse) and 5-11 Juwan Staten (Dayton), Hargrave's 6-5 Lorenzo Brown (N.C. State), 6-8 Dominique Ferguson (Florida International) and 6-2 Isaiah Epps (Pittsburgh) and Christ School's 6-0 Eric Smith (South Carolina).
Oak Hill's duo of 6-8 Roscoe Smith and 6-4 Doron Lamb, and Hargrave's 6-9 Shawn Kemp, Jr. also are top-rated talents.
Smith has narrowed his choices to Duke, Georgetown and Connecticut; while the top of Lamb's final list includes Kansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma. Kemp, the son of former NBA star Shawn Kemp, is considering Georgia, Auburn, Arkansas, Tennessee and Marshall.
Cave Spring's game against Christ School -- which finished No. 17 in the final USA Today national rankings in 2008-09 -- features an interesting coaching matchup.
Cave Spring coach Billy Hicks and Christ School coach David Gaines were teammates at Roanoke College.
The Knights -- who won the VHSL Group AA Division 3 championship in March -- feature 6-11 center Josh Henderson, who has narrowed his list of prospective schools to Davidson and Vanderbilt.
Christ School is led by 7-foot Marshall Plumlee, the younger brother of Duke players Miles and Mason Plumlee. Duke is one of many high-major Division I schools recruiting the younger Plumlee.
Fishburne is operating a postgraduate team for the first time. The Caissons are coached by Ed Huckaby, a former assistant at Wright State and Hampton universities as well as Bethel High School.
Hargrave's roster includes former Lord Botetourt standout Hunter Foley.
Oak Hill -- which finished No. 2 nationally last year -- also features guard Pe'Shon Howard (Marquette or South Florida), and 7-foot-1 Latvian Martins Abele.
Tournament organizers Woody Deans and Steve Myers are hoping to land famed Washington, D.C. power DeMatha for next year's event, Myers said.
Tickets for the event cost $10 with $5 from each ticket going to the Kiwanis children's fund, Myers said.
Oak Hill also will play Blue Ridge School on Jan. 30 at Franklin County High School.
Oak Hill and Hargrave will hold a scrimmage Oct. 21 at Pulaski County High School.
Botetourt to induct five Hall members
Lord Botetourt will induct five new members into its athletic hall of fame during a 10 a.m. ceremony at the high school.
The inductees are:
-- Jerry Abbott, class of 1961, who played for the 1959 Group III state championship basketball team and was named to the 1960-61 all-state football team. He earned a basketball scholarship to Tusculum (Tenn.).
-- Roy Petty, class of 1962, a member of the 1959 state championship basketball squad who also was named to a national high school all-star football team in 1961.
-- Mike Poole, class of 1973, who was the first Botetourt player to be selected to the VHSCA East-West all-star football game and was an All-Timesland selection in baseball. He signed a football scholarship with Virginia Tech.
-- Mike Bryant, class of 1977, who set a single-season school football record for rushing yards in 1976 and set Botetourt's school baseball record for stolen bases.
-- Alan Brenner, who served as Botetourt's principal from 1998-2009 and oversaw numerous improvements to the athletic facilities on campus.
Pulaski Co. to retire two more FB numbers
Pulaski County will retire the jersey numbers of former football stars Todd Grantham and Jeff King during a ceremony Feb. 5 at the Cougars' basketball game against Blacksburg.
King is a tight end with the NFL's Carolina Panthers while Grantham is an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys. Both starred at Virginia Tech.
Previously, Pulaski retired the jersey numbers of receiver Gary Clark and place-kicker Shayne Graham.
