Hidden Valley jumps out front quickly against Byrd

Hidden Valley senior tailback David Williams rushed for a school-record 296 yards last week in an opening-game victory over Patrick Henry.
It took him seven days to establish a new one.

Williams galloped for 314 yards and four touchdowns, helping Hidden Valley (2-0) demolish William Byrd (1-1) 49-14 at Bogle Field on Friday night.

In two games, Williams has gained 610 yards and scored seven touchdowns . For the season, he’s averaging 11.3 yards per carry.

Like last week, Williams sat out the fourth quarter. From the bench, he watched his replacement, Jung Kim, race 65 yards around the right end for Hidden Valley’s seventh and final rushing TD. Hidden Valley gained 456 rushing yards in the game.

Titans sophomore quarterback Michael Simonic carried the ball four times for 72 yards and two touchdowns. He also converted both of his passing attempts.

Hidden Valley did not turn the ball over and recovered three Byrd fumbles, two of which led to immediate scores. The Titans led 28-7 at halftime and 42-7 after three quarters.

“They were too much for us, we were outmanned,” said 29-year Byrd  coach Jeff Highfill. “We’re very inexperienced. I looked out there one time and we had four freshmen in the game and that was before we put the second team in.”

Friday’s matchup was expected to be a battle of running backs, as Byrd’s Derrick Palmer surpassed 300 yards rushing in the Terriers’ opening-week win over Rustburg. Palmer posted strong numbers against Hidden Valley, picking up 162 yards on 29 carries, but Hidden Valley  allowed him to penetrate the end zone once. Palmer had a 29-yard run early in the second half, but shortly thereafter, Byrd turned the ball over on downs deep in Hidden Valley territory. No  of Palmer’s other runs exceeded 15 yards.

Williams, on the other hand,  had three touchdown runs of 24 yards or more, and reeled off a 55-yard weaving jaunt on the first play of the third quarter that set up one of his touchdowns.

As in last week’s performance, Williams did not outrun the defense as much as he eluded tacklers by changing pace and direction, refusing to go down on initial contact.

“Williams is not flashy, but he’s a hard runner,” Highfill said.

“David’s wrestling background really makes him hard to bring down,” Hidden Valley coach Scott Weaver said. “He was third in the state in wrestling last year at 145 pounds.”

Williams carried every play on two HV scoring drives sandwiched around halftime, gaining 53 yards on four plays late in the second quarter and picking up 82 yards on the first three plays from scrimmage in the third period.
