Coaches association picks: Bruins' Moore player of year

Forward Alistair Moore, whose goal in the fourth overtime Sunday gave Blacksburg a 3-2 victory in the state championship game, has been named the Group AA boys soccer player of the year by the Virginia High School Coaches Association.

Jefferson Forest's Jedd Zaring was named the Group AA coach of the year after leading the Cavaliers to an unbeaten season before a semifinal loss to Blacksburg.

Moore earned first-team honors along with David Rochow of Jefferson Forest, Tyler Snow of William Byrd, Will Reynolds of Martinsville and Taylor Woodrum of Cave Spring.

Second-team recognition went to Matthew Cox of Lord Botetourt, David Jackson of Jefferson Forest, Zach Corcoran of Martinsville, Daniel Turpin of Pulaski County and Jackson Rankin of Blacksburg.

3 area players make baseball 1st team

Two Glenvar players -- junior Eric Austin and senior Anthony Ratliff -- and James River sophomore Tyler Duke have been named to the first team on the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Group A baseball team.

Austin made the team as a pitcher, while Ratliff earned a spot at second base. Duke was tabbed as a utility player.

Glenvar's Eddy Kasper, Fort Chiswell's Mark Gallimore and Galax's Todd Nichols were named to the second team in voting by a panel of coaches.

Catcher Gavin Hylton of Group A champion Chatham was picked as the player of the year. Chatham's Chad Anderson was the coach of the year.
