High school roundup: Knights rally to win Pioneer softball title
COVINGTON -- Hope Falls' two-run double in the eighth inning scored Taylor Statome and Lauren Osborne, allowing James River to overcome Bath County's go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth and earn a 4-3 victory in the Pioneer District softball tournament championship game on Thursday.
Bath had gone up 2-0 in the first inning but Chelsea Rodriguez hit a two-run double for the Knights to tie the game in the fourth.
Falls went 3-for-4 and Haley Shotwell had 10 strikeouts over eight innings in the win.
Sam Shifflett had two hits and two RBIs for Bath County.
Softball
Hogoheegee District
Northwood 2, George Wythe 1
EMORY -- Kendra Nutter's two-run double in the fourth inning lifted the Panthers to a win and eliminated the Maroons from the postseason.
Wythe scored with two outs in the top of the seventh on Rebecca Lewis' RBI-single. Northwood pitcher Chelsey Cardwell struck out Jordan Quinn to end the game.|
Northwood will face Holston in the championship game.
Mountain Empire District
Grayson County 10, Galax 1
INDEPENDENCE -- Senior shortstop Megan Wiggins knocked in five runs as the Blue Devils captured the Mountain Empire District championship.
Grayson County has allowed a total of one run in its last three games.

Piedmont District
Tunstall 12, Bassett 2
MARTINSVILLE -- Regular-season champion Tunstall broke open a 4-2 game by scoring two runs in the fifth inning and sixth in the sixth in support of Virginia Tech-bound pitcher Joe Mantiply in the district title game.
Patrick County 14, Magna Vista 0, 5 innings
MARTINSVILLE -- The Cougars scored all 14 of their runs in the first inning to clinch a regional berth by winning the district third-place game.
Patrick County had only two hits in the first inning but went through its batting order twice, thanks to nine walks, three hit batsmen and two errors.
Pioneer District
James River 10, Craig County 0
Knights' freshman Jarret White took a perfect game into the sixth inning of the first district and finished with a no-hitter in raising his record to 5-1.
White struck out six batters and got batting support from junior center fielder Andrew Tucker, who was 2-for-3 and scored three runs, and junior first baseman Bryan Buchanan, who was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
James River improved its record to 16-3 and Craig fell to 7-13.
Covington 4, Bath County 3
The Cougars trailed 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, when an infield error led to the go-ahead and winning runs. That put Covington into the Region C tournament.
Junior third baseman Mike Myers was 2-for-4 for the Cougars (10-10) and knocked in their first two runs. Sophomore infielder Josh Robertson was 3-for-4 and had an RBI for the Chargers, who ended their season at 13-7.
Mountain Empire District
Grayson County 9, Fort Chiswell 3
INDEPENDENCE -- The Blue Devils snapped a 3-3 tie with a five-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by senior shortstop Jessup Lambert.
Junior catcher Brent Graham went 2-for-3 and had three RBI for Grayson County (12-7). Senior center fielder Ben Osborne was 2-for-2.
By winning the Mountain Empire District tournament, Grayson will host the Hogoheegee District champion in the first round of the regionals.
The Pioneers (14-6) will go to Chilhowie.
Boys soccer
Western Valley District
E.C. Glass 7, William Fleming 0
LYNCHBURG -- Jake Link recorded a hat trick, scoring three goals to lead E.C. Glass (9-6-2) past William Fleming (8-5-2).
The Hilltoppers cruised to a 5-0 halftime lead and easily moved on to the Western Valley District final against Patrick Henry.
Three Rivers District
Radford 10, Auburn 0
RADFORD -- The Bobcats raced to a 7-0 halftime lead in beating the Eagles for the third time this season.
Lucas Findley had two goals for Radford (12-2-1) and Taka Masuda added one goal and two assists.
Auburn dropped to 6-11.
Giles 5, Glenvar 3
RADFORD -- Cody Journell scored four goals to lead the second-seeded Spartans to a semifinal win.
Giles (11-4-1) clinched a Region C playoff berth. Third-seeded Glenvar finished 9-7.
Cooper Tyree and Cory Terrell scored to give Glenvar a 2-0 lead. Journell scored three straight goals to give Giles the lead.
Alex Kelly scored to tie the score at 3 with 18 minutes to go.
Journell scored the go-ahead goal with 15 minutes left.
Travis Scott added an insurance goal. Three of Journell's goals came on penalty kicks.
Mountain Empire District
Galax 9, Fort Chiswell 0
FORT CHISWELL -- Ismael Hernandez, Jose Rojas and Edu Rojas each scored two goals to lead top-seeded Galax (13-2-2) to the district title.
Girls Soccer
Seminole District
Liberty 5, Amherst 1
BEDFORD -- Senior forwards Aspen Rautio and Maggie Rawlins accounted for all five goals for the Minettes in the Seminole District third-place game.
Rautio scored three goals and Rawlins added two goals and an assist for Liberty (11-4). The Minettes advance to regional play Monday at R.E. Lee in Staunton.
Amherst (7-11-1) plays the Blue Ridge District runner-up.
Three Rivers District
Radford 5, Glenvar 1
Mary Wiley recorded two goals and an assist to lead Radford (16-2) to the district championship.
Pip Pattison added two goals and Cece Scott scored one for the Bobcats.
Carly Martin scored the goal for Glenvar (13-5).
Piedmont District
Bassett 1, Tunstall 0
BASSETT -- After beating Tunstall in a playoff for the regular-season Piedmont District championship and the No. 1 seed, the Bengals blanked the Trojans to claim the tournament title and a first-round home game in the regionals.
Patrick County 1, Martinsville 0
BASSETT -- The Cougars held off the Bulldogs to claim the final Piedmont spot in the regionals in the third-place game.
Pioneer District
James River 3, Bath County 0
LOW MOOR -- Wren Hoyt, Stacie Hogan and Heather Reynolds each scored a goal to lead James River (8-7) to the district championship.
With the win, the Knights will get home-field advantage for the first round of the regional tournament Tuesday.

Hidden Valley 6, Graham 0
BLUEFIELD -- Sammy Schwartz, Nick Barker, Brandon Altieri, Chris Migliarese, Ben Hunter and Alex Wyatt won singles matches to give the Titans the regional title.
GIRLS Tennis
Region IV Tournament
Hidden Valley 5, Graham 0
MARTINSVILLE -- Kristin Harter, Whitney Walton, Emily Seibert, Haley Podeschi and Piper Burrow won singles matches to give the Titans (15-0) the regional title for the second straight year.
The Titans claimed a Group AA tournament berth.
