High school roundup: Whitaker leads PH to district finals

HALIFAX -- Zach Whitaker threw a complete game and went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Patrick Henry to a 6-2 win over Halifax County on Wednesday to earn a spot in Friday's championship game.

Aaron Burton also went 3-for-4, while Will Kaufman drove in two runs for the Patriots (12-10) .

Luis Gastelum hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to make it 6-2 and seal the game for the Patriots.

Baseball

Western Valley District

George Washington 7, Franklin County 6

ROCKY MOUNT -- James Feldman went 3-for-4 with a home run to lead George Washington to the district championship game, and Travis Coates got the win.

Franklin County had the tying and winning runners on in the seventh inning but couldn't get them in.

Javin Metez went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Logan Perdue went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Franklin County (11-9).

Seminole District

Jefferson Forest 3, Brookville 0

FOREST -- Bobby Shelton went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Cavaliers to the Seminole District semifinal win over the Bees in the tournament semifinals.

Eric Heilgenstadt got the win on the mound for Jefferson Forest.

Southwest District

Carroll County 4, Marion 3

HILLSVILLE -- Craig Rosen knocked in the game-winning run on a fifth inning single to lift the Cavaliers to the district tourney semifinals.

Mike Nicely of Marion blasted a three-run homer in the top of the third inning to tie the score, but the Cavaliers' Adam Crotts pitched three innings of scoreless relief to secure the victory. Carroll County next plays Tazewell.

Seminole District

Amherst County 5, Jefferson Forest 0

AMHERST -- April Pugh went 4-4 with an RBI double for the Lancers, as they advanced in the Seminole District tourney final.

Amber Smith went 1-3 with a double for the Cavaliers.

Piedmont District

Patrick County 3, Bassett 2

MARTINSVILLE -- Brittany Stovall launched the game-winning two-run home run in the sixth inning to propel Patrick County to district title game.

Kaitlyn Culler tossed a complete game four-hitter, and struck out 11 batters in the win.

Pioneer District

James River 8, Craig County 2

COVINGTON -- Haley Shotwell allowed three hits while tossing complete-game victory for the Knights.

Lauren Osbourne had three RBIs for James River, which will play Bath County in the Pioneer District championship game.

Seminole District

Jefferson Forest 4, Amherst County 0

AMHERST-- David Rochow scored twice and had an assist for the Cavaliers, as they shut out the Lancers (9-7-1) in the Seminole District semifinals.

David Jackson and Ian Case notched the other goals for Jefferson Forest (17-0).

Piedmont District

Bassett 3, Tunstall 0

MARTINSVILLE-- Matt Chitwood scored twice and Tyler Martin added a third goal as the Bengals advanced to the Piedmont District finals where they will meet Martinsville.

Martinsville 4, Magna Vista 2, OT

MARTINSVILLE-- An own goal committed by Martinsville with one minute remaining in regulation sent the Piedmont District semifinals to overtime, only for the Bulldogs to redeem themselves in the extra time.

Martinsville led 2-1 when they knocked the ball into their own net.

Hampton Snyder scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick in overtime, and Zach Corcoran added the insurance goal soon after.

Girls Soccer

Blue Ridge District

Lord Botetourt 10, Alleghany 0

Colleen Schrier and Macey Tyree scored two goals apiece to lead Lord Botetourt to the semifinal win at William Byrd High School.

Kristyn Brogan had the shutout in goal for the Cavaliers (11-5).

William Byrd 4, Northside 1

Kelli Kitchens' hat trick carried the host Terriers to the championship game over the Vikings.

Katherine Mau had the first goal of the game to put Northside on top, but William Byrd responded quickly on the way to the win.

Seminole District

Staunton River 2, Liberty 1

BEDFORD -- Katie Brown scored the game-winning goal with 21 minutes remaining to push the Golden Eagles into the Seminole District championship game.

Jodi Salyer added the other Staunton River goal in the first half. Bridget Buchanan added the only score for the Minettes.

Jefferson Forest 7, Amherst County 1

BEDFORD -- Chelsea Hayes had three goals, and Cameron DeWitt added 2 more goals as Jefferson Forest breezed past the Lancers in the Seminole District semifinals.

The Cavaliers face Staunton River in the final.

Boys lacrosse

Region II

Broad Run 16, Salem 3

ASHBURN-- Tim Saunders found the back of the net six times for Broad Run, while Ryan Madigan added 3 scores to lead hosts.

Salem (13-5) was led in scoring by Matt Faris and Lance Thomas, each scoring a goal apiece.

Salem won the faceoff battle 21-15, one of the few bright spots in the Region II finals defeat.
