Bruins, Knights reign at Cosmopolitan track meet
Blacksburg's boys win their second straight Cosmo, and Rachel Crum leads Cave Spring.

Runners competing in the 3,200 relay leave the starting line during Saturday's Cosmopolitan Invitational. Blacksburg won the event.

Patrick Henry's Phillip Mesadieu puts the shot during the Cosmopolitan Invitational. Mesadieu won both the shot put and discus Saturday.
A former gymnast helped Cave Spring flip its fortunes in the Cosmopolitan Invitational.
Rachel Crum, in her first year competing in the hurdles, won both the 100-meter highs and the 300-meter intermediates Saturday at Salem High School in leading the Knights to their first Cosmo girls track and field title in seven years.
Crum took the 100 hurdles in 16.27 seconds and came back for the 300 hurdles in 50.12 despite having no background in either event before the 2009 season.
"I did gymnastics for 13 years," Crum said. "Last summer I decided I wanted to do hurdles, so every day I went over there every single morning before work."
And how much technical expertise did Crum have about hurdling?
"I knew you had to go low over them and sprint in between them," she said.
"The only thing that's wrong with me when I do hurdles is my arms. My arms fly out and they're supposed to be down, tucked in. We actually tried to fix my arms and it slowed me down."
Crum said her gymnastics background came in handy when it came to Hurdling 101.
"There's this jump in gymnastics called a 'wolf jump.' " she said. "I know it doesn't make sense but the form you do in a wolf jump is the exact same form you do when you're going over a hurdle."
Winning the team title proved to be no obstacle for Cave Spring, which claimed seven straight girls championships from 1996-2002 before the former Group AAA school lost most of its enrollment with the formation of Hidden Valley.
Also getting wins from Lauren Bosche in the high jump (5 feet), Edy Ndem in the triple jump (35-3 12) and Tatum Tyler in the 800 (2 minutes, 21.70 seconds), the Knights outscored a depleted Blacksburg team 116-84. Christiansburg was third with 70 points.
"This is really the first year we've gone after it since the split," Cave Spring coach Tommy Maguire said.
Blacksburg claimed its second straight boys team title 82-74 over Christiansburg. Salem placed third with 62.
The Bruins were keyed by a double-win from George Carter in the 1,600 (4:27.96) and 3,200 (10:04.31), less than 24 hours after joining several teammates in a meet in Richmond.
No varsity meet records were set Saturday, but Patrick Henry's Phillip Mesadieu came close to a pair.
The PH strongman swept the shot put (55-9 12) and discus (156-3), missing the mark in the shot by 11 inches and in the disc by just over 5 feet.
"I was close to the records but I psyched myself out," Mesadieu said. "People around me kept telling me, 'Man, you can do it.' It was a lack of focus.
"One of my throws I know was over the record in the shot but I scratched it. They said one of my toes was over the rim."
Mesadieu is the athletic opposite of his older brother, former PH sprinter Joseph Mesadieu, who swept the 100, 200 and 400 in the 2007 Cosmo.
Phillip Mesadieu hopes to join Liberty University's football program as a walk-on. Joseph is a running back at Glenville State (W.Va.). The two schools will meet on the gridiron in 2010.
What would happen if the two brothers collide at the line of scrimmage?
"I don't know, but I know I'm not going to be the one on the ground on their back," Phillip said.
Glenvar junior Philip Morris nearly matched the 31-year-old record of 6-10 in the high jump. Just three days after suffering a foot injury that he believed would keep him out of the meet, Morris cleared 6-9 and had three jumps that nearly equalled the record set in 1978 by William Byrd's Anthony Conner.
"We found out my foot was just slightly irritated," Morris said. "There's nothing really wrong with it. They said if there's any pain just to use ice."
Glenvar's other returning VHSL Group A champion -- distance star Megan Marsico -- is returning to form after missing five weeks with groin and IT band pulls.
Marsico won the 3,200 (11:26.60) but placed third in the 1,600 behind Blacksburg's twins -- Kathleen and Joanna Stevens -- as the first two laps were run at an extremely slow pace.
"The mile was very strategic, I would have say," Marsico said. "It's never happened to me like that. No one wanted to lead it."
William Fleming's Kayla Lewis came up short in her bid to improve her meet record in the shot put, but she won the event at 40-4 12 and also took the discus (115-4).
Salem's Scott Campbell was a double winner for the boys, claiming the long jump (21-4) and the 200 (22.75) in a photo finish with 100-meter champ Phillip Scott of Northside.
