High school notebook: Chavira, Walsh pick UVa

Patrick Henry junior Cameron Chavira and Hidden Valley junior Parker Walsh play soccer for the same club team.

By the fall of 2010, they figure to be on the same college squad.

Chavira and Walsh -- who both suit up for the Roanoke Star U-17 squad -- have made oral commitments to Virginia.

Chavira, a forward who has 13 goals and six assists for Patrick Henry this spring, said he will be an invited walk-on at UVa. Chavira said he received an offer from UVa coach George Gelnovatch shortly after the Disney Showcase in Orlando in late December.

Walsh is bypassing his junior season at Hidden Valley and is currently playing for a junior team in Germany. Roanoke Star director Danny Beamer confirmed Walsh's commitment to UVa.

Virginia has a streak of 29 straight NCAA tournament appearances. The Cavaliers finished 11-9-1 in 2008, losing to eventual NCAA champion Maryland in the ACC final and falling 2-0 to Connecticut in the first round of the NCAAs.

Chavira, who chose Virginia over William and Mary, said he can be a productive player at UVa.

Hidden Valley forward-midfielder Mark Bixler has committed to Virginia Tech, Titans head coach Sean Pratt said.

Bixler is currently out of Hidden Valley's lineup because of an undetermined illness, Pratt said.

Georgetown offers Daniels

William Fleming senior Troy Daniels, the 2009 Timesland boys basketball player of the year, has been offered a scholarship by Georgetown.

Fleming coach Mickey Hardy said Daniels, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard, is considering offers from Georgetown, VCU and Marshall. Daniels has taken official visits to Georgetown and VCU, with a trip to Marshall scheduled next week.

Hardy said that 6-7 Fleming center Jamelle Hagins has offers from Delaware, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Marshall. Hagins and Daniels plan to visit Marshall together.

Daniels, Blaylock net Kiwanis honors

Daniels and Lord Botetourt's Grace Blaylock have been named the boys and girls basketball players of the year, respectively, by the Salem-Roanoke-Botetourt Kiwanis clubs.

Daniels was joined on the first team by Hagins, Josh Henderson of Cave Spring, Rick Alderman of Lord Botetourt and Andrew Morris of Hidden Valley.

The girls team also included Kayla Osborne of Hidden Valley, Sarah Williams of Patrick Henry, Monica Boatwright of Cave Spring and Samantha Webster of William Byrd.

Cave Spring's Billy Hicks was named the boys coach of the year, while Chuck Pound of Lord Botetourt and Randy Bush of Hidden Valley were chosen girls co-coaches of the year.

Voting was done by the head coaches of the 13 high schools in the Roanoke Valley recognized by the Kiwanis clubs.

The Western Virginia Officials Organization chose Winston Simmons as its official of the year. The WVOA gave its sportsmanship awards to Northside's boys program and the Lord Botetourt girls.

Byrd threesome to run in college

William Byrd's Alisha Royal (Longwood), Caleb Kingery (Lenoir-Rhyne) and Drew Hall (Radford) all will continue their track and field careers at the next level.

Royal placed third in the Blue Ridge District cross country meet last fall and was seventh in the Group AA indoor track meet in the 500 meters.

Hall and Kingery were members of Byrd's 3,200-meter relay team that won the Group AA title last spring. Hall placed third in the 800 meters.

Currys to highlight benefit in Radford

Former Virginia Tech and NBA star Dell Curry and his two sons -- Stephen and Seth -- are scheduled to participate in a benefit basketball game May 2 at Radford High School as part of Dana Palmer memorial weekend.

Also committed to play in the benefit game are former Tech and Green Bay Packers receiver Antonio Freeman; ex-Radford High School and West Virginia point guard Darris Nichols;, former Radford University star and current Blacksburg basketball coach Doug Day; Tech assistant football coaches Torrian Gray and Kevin Sherman; ex-RU basketball star Ron Shelburne; and high school athletes, including Pulaski County's Nubian Peak and Radford's Jon Thompson.

The weekend also includes a golf tournament May 1 at Draper Valley and other activities.

Proceeds from the event go to the Dana Palmer Memorial Scholarship, in honor of a former Radford High School athlete and Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputy who died of cancer in 2001 at age 31.
