BASEBALL
Christiansburg 7, Giles 2
PEARISBURG -- Jonathan Taylor led off Christiansburg's six-run fourth inning with a solo home run and winning pitcher Brad Cox added a two-run double later in the inning.
Demons starting pitcher Seth Martin struck out seven over four innings in the season opener for both teams.
Caleb Tilley had two of Giles' four hits.
Cave Spring 5, Jefferson Forest 3
Tucker Green went 2-for-3 with four RBIs to lead host Cave Spring (1-0), while Carter Mull added two hits.
Green's three-run home run in the fourth sparked a four-run fourth inning for the Knights.
Hunter Gordon drove in two runs and Bobby Shelton hit a solo home run to lead JF (0-1).
Bassett 14, Patrick Henry 4, 6 inn.
BASSETT -- Desmond Woods had a pair to two-RBI doubles as the Bengals scored five times in the fifth and added six more in the sixth.
Caleb Naff added four hits and three runs for Bassett. Ryan Boyd got the win in relief.
Yates Sayers had two hits and an RBI for PH.
Franklin Co. 7, Patrick Co. 3
STUART -- Nick Colliver had two hits for the visiting Eagles in the season opener for both teams.
Chris Nettemeyer picked up the victory, allowing two hits and striking out two in five innings.
Jake Williams drove in a run for Patrick County.
Blacksburg 13, Magna Vista 2
RIDGEWAY -- Trey Gresh and George Perkovich homered for the visiting Bruins (1-0).
Perkovich also picked up the win on the mound.
Harvey Taylor doubled and Chris Ramey drove in a run for the Warriors (1-0).
Alleghany 13, Covington 2
COVINGTON -- Jacob Vaughn had two hits and drove in a run for the visiting Mountaineers in the season opener for both teams.
Sean Perkins had two hits and drove in a run for the Cougars. Alleghany's Tommy Jackson got the win, striking out six in four innings.
Radford 5, Fort Chiswell 4
RADFORD -- Brian Sowers drove in Patrick Webb in the bottom of the seventh for Radford (1-0).
Colby Turner led the Bobcats with two hits and two RBIs and Tyler Hoy also had two hits.
Mark Gallimore had tied the game in the top of the seventh with an RBI-single for Fort Chiswell (0-1).
Auburn 14, Narrows 1, 5 innings
RINER -- Nathan Vaughn tossed a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and no earned runs for Auburn (1-0).
Michael Spencer went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs while Dalton Altizer had two hits, three runs, two RBIs and a home run for the Eagles.
Corey Lowe had the only hit for Narrows (0-1).
P. McCluer 16, Roanoke Catholic 6
BUENA VISTA -- D.J. Taylor had two hits, including a three-run triple, and scored four times to lead the host Fighting Blues (1-0).
Keenan Martin added three hits and two RBIs.
Josh Greer had three RBIs for the Celtics (0-1).
SOFTBALL
William Byrd 1, Salem 0
William Byrd's Jessica Mahoney struck out eight and walked two in a two-hit shutout.
Jamie Green scored the lone run, drawing a walk from Salem's Ellen Weaver, then scoring on a misplayed fly ball to center field. Weaver struck out 13, gave up five hits and walked one.
Auburn 13, Blacksburg 4
BLACKSBURG -- Auburn scored four runs in the fifth inning and seven runs in the sixth in the season opener for both teams.
Joelle Gross went 2-for-5 with three runs scored for the Eagles. Tabby Whitlock added two hits and drove in three runs.
Heather Didinger was the winning pitcher, striking out 13 in a complete-game effort.
Kelly Shaver had two hits and drove in three runs for the host Bruins.
Christiansburg 16, Giles 0, 5 inn.
CHRISTIANSBURG -- Emily Wallace struck out seven and walked two in a four hit, five-inning shutout for Christiansburg.
Tracy Davis went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple and Brittany Broyles went 3-for-4 for the Blue Demons.
Floyd County 13, Pulaski County 4
DUBLIN -- Kat Mills went 2-for-4 with a home run, and Alexis Roop had a grand slam in the first inning for the Buffaloes in the season opener.
Mills also picked up the victory on the mound. Jessi Hall added two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for Floyd County. Cari Dunavent hit a home run and Ashley Alley drove in a run for the hosting Cougars.
P. McCluer 13, R. Catholic 0, 5 inn.
Emily Ferguson struck out seven and allowed no hits in the opening game for both teams.
Jordan Fitzgerald had two hits and three RBIs for the Fighting Blues. Kelsey Cole had two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs.
Ava Perez struck out four for Catholic.
Alleghany 16, Covington 6, 6 inn.
LOW MOOR -- Holly Warlitner went 4-for-4, scored five runs and stole five bases, while Eli McCutchen drove in three runs for Alleghany (1-0).
Lindsay Sizemore had two hits for Covington (0-1).

Giles 1, Christiansburg 1, OT
PEARISBURG -- Christiansburg's Carl Leist and Giles' Travis Scott scored goals. The Spartans Tanner Gorrell also had an assist.
Brent Bostwick had nine saves for Christiansburg (0-0-1). Johnnie Fields made 15 saves for Giles (0-0-1).
Rockbridge Co. 2, Parry McCluer 0
BUENA VISTA -- Marshall Lancey had two goals and Mitch Joyce added an assist for Rockbridge County (1-0).
The Wildcats did not allow a shot on goal.
Fort Chiswell 6, Auburn 2
MAX MEADOWS -- Dakota Mabe scored three goals, Storm Bond two goals and Gaven Burnette had the other goal to lead Fort Chiswell (1-0).
GIRLS' SOCCER

Molly Satterfield scored two goals to lead Salem (1-0) past William Byrd (0-1). Kim Elmore, Claire Sexton and Harmon Hall each added one goal.

FOREST -- Suzanne Sciarrino scored off of a cornerkick by Katherine Frank in the 70th minute to give JF the win in the opener for both teams.
Dorothy Nugent made five saves for the Cavaliers. Lauren Markey had one save for the Knights.

STUART -- Katie Kipreos scored three goals, Tori Washburn scored two and Sarah Puckett added one to lead Patrick County (1-0) over Carroll County (0-1).
Chelsea Hardy had six saves in the shutout.

BUENA VISTA -- Tracy Joyce scored two goals to lead the visiting Wildcats (1-0).
