Bland girls' loss leaves Fort Chiswell champs

GALAX -- Allison White totaled 15 points and 15 rebounds and Bailey Shumate added 12 points to help Galax upend Bland County 45-41 in a Mountain Empire District girls basketball game on Tuesday night.

The loss gave Bland County two district losses, giving Fort Chiswell the regular-season district championship.

Laurel Hankins led the Bears with 16 points.

Melvin Henderson had 12 points and seven assists for Patrick Henry and Ronnie Thomas was praised by coach Jack Esworthy for his "lock-down defense."

"We took George Washington to the wire at the end of last week and we're probably playing the best we have all season," Esworthy said.

Franklin County inbounded the ball, but Howerton stole it away and was fouled again. After he sank his first free throw, GW made an offensive rebound and ran out the clock.

Howerton finished with 19 points, and C.J. Barksdale led GW with 23.

DUBLIN -- The Cougars clinched a tie for first in the River Ridge District's regular-season race behind 20 points by senior Nubian Peak.

Peak scored 14 points in the second half, including nine of Pulaski's 13 points in the third quarter. Carter White had nine points and 10 rebounds.

"This is the time of year when you want to be playing better; we only shot 38 percent from the field but we did a good job defensively to make up for it," Cougars coach Mark Hanks said.

Pulaski's remaining regular-season game is a non-conference affair with Radford. Cave Spring can force a playoff by beating Christiansburg.
