High school wrestling roundup: Chilhowie earns Hogoheegee crown
SALTVILLE -- Four Chilhowie wrestlers won individual championships to lead the Warriors to the Hogoheegee District team crown on Saturday at Northwood High School.
Chilhowie amassed 200 points to easily outdistance second-place Rural Retreat, which finished with 176.5. Northwood placed third (153.5), followed by Holston (100), George Wythe (97.5) and Patrick Henry-Glade Spring (37).
Christian Russell won the championship at 112 pounds for Chilhowie. Joining Russell on the winners' podium were teammates Will Barker (130), Josh Adams (171) and Alex Russell (189).
Southern Valley District
STUARTS DRAFT -- Robert E. Lee dominated in winning the Southern Valley District crown.
The Leemen finished with 232 points and six champions to finish well ahead of second-place Rockbridge County (150).
Rockbridge County's Joe Wallace (140) and David Cox (189) won championships.
Seminole District
AMHERST -- Every starter for Brookville advanced to the Region III tournament as the Bees outpointed second-place Jefferson Forest 276.5-238 to win its 40th consecutive Seminole District title.
The Bees claimed a district-high seven championships and had five wrestlers lose championship matches.
Blake Woodall (103) and Will Drinkard (112) won titles for the Cavaliers.
Staunton River, which finished third (207), had five champions. They were Austin Carr (135), Jeremy Tyree (140), Nick Manley (152), Scott Fike (171) and Dustin Kidd (189).
Virginia Independent Conference
LYNCHBURG -- North Cross and Roanoke Catholic each won two individual crowns, but Liberty Christian walked away with the team championship after four Bulldogs earned titles.
LCA finished with 201 points to outdistance second-place North Cross, which finished with 127.5 points.
Ike Podell (125) and Brent Ring (160) earned championships for the Raiders. Jacob Patrick (112) and Connor Shanahan (189) were title winners for the Celtics.
Southwest District
GRUNDY -- Whispers suggested that this might be the year Carroll County supplanted Grundy as the Southwest District wrestling champion.
Grundy loudly answered the call with its 25th consecutive district title. The Golden Wave won the team championship 233.5-178.5 over Carroll County and saw seven wrestlers win their weight classifications.
Carroll County's Blake Bowman (130) and Drew McCraw (275) won their weight classes.
