William Fleming's boys do well in red

ROCKY MOUNT -- The last time William Fleming's basketball team came to Rocky Mount, the Colonels beat Franklin County.

Friday night, the Colonels tried to be Franklin County.

Wearing red Franklin County jerseys because of a pregame snafu, Fleming felt right at home as the Colonels hammered North Cross 71-38 in the nightcap of the Member One/Time Technologies Classic.

Senior guard Troy Daniels hit 7-of-8 shots from the field -- including all six of his 3-point goals -- and finished with 20 points to lead the rout for Timesland's top-ranked team.

Daniels said his stroke was off during pregame warmups after Fleming had to switch jerseys because both teams showed up wearing white.

"It wasn't feeling good in warmups," he said. "I guess it was the adrenaline from the game. And we were already angry we had to wear those jerseys. That was the fire."

Fleming was supposed to have brought its blue road jerseys, but somewhere along the way the lines of communication got crossed. It did not help that Friday was the last day on the job for Colonels athletic director John Elliott.

"We got a packet earlier saying we were going to be the home team," Fleming coach Mickey Hardy said. "One of the gentlemen came and told us he had e-mailed our AD informing us we were the away team. Of course, we didn't get that message."

Fleming (16-2) sent a message early to North Cross, jumping on the Raiders for 51-20 lead halfway through the third quarter. Daniels was on fire, hitting from both corners and the deep wings.

"We were hanging on him pretty good," North Cross coach Joe Lambert said. "They weren't horse shots."

The game marked the first time Fleming had played against North Cross center A.D. Banks. The 6-foot-5 junior led the Raiders with 15 points, 10 in the first half.

"It was my first time seeing him in awhile," Daniels said. "He played on my old AAU team. I knew what he could do. I didn't know if he had any help or not."

Toles Hartman added 10 points for North Cross, including two dunks.

Jamelle Hagins scored 15 points for Fleming, including a monster alley-oop slam on an inbounds feed from Stephon Anderson.

Mostly, North Cross allowed Fleming to have any shot it wanted. The Raiders committed just three fouls in the game. Lambert said his team learned a big lesson.

"Intensity, just the level you need to be at if you want to go anywhere," the North Cross coach said. "They're a really good team."

North Cross played without injured starters Sid Brown and Fuller Clark. Lambert said he is uncertain about their return.

"When I planned this we had those two starters," Lambert said. "That changes things just a tad."

Fleming rested its starters for most of the second half. The Colonels have a home game tonight against Halifax County. Presumable, the Colonels will not be wearing Franklin County jerseys.

"That was the worst," Hagins said. "I don't want to ever do that again. I like my blue and gold."
