Big Blue Wrestling Tournament: Blue Demons own home mat

CHRISTIANSBURG -- Spectators attending the Big Blue Invitational at Christiansburg High School probably felt like the host team was very welcoming.

There were tons of food and merchandise.

There were great matches and great seats from which to view them.

But on the mat, the Blue Demons were much less hospitable to their guests on Saturday.

The Blue Demons showed why they are ranked so high in the nation, winning the overall championship with a dominating score of 330.5. Louisa came in second with 118, Carroll County was third with 117, Langley was fourth with 116.5 and Brentsville took fifth with 115.

The host team achieved the lofty score by sending eight wrestlers to the championship round with five of them winning their division.

"I think we did a lot of really good things," Christiansburg coach Daryl Weber said, "We had 13 guys place out of 14 ... but we've got a lot of things to work on."

Devin Carter scored the first individual championship of the evening for Christiansburg in the 112-pound division by pinning Cody Smith of Alleghany, N.C.

Carter admitted that there's some added pressure, being as highly ranked as he is.

"After the Beast of the East and Ironman I kind of came out on top and you know ... you kind of have a target on you and everything," he said.

In earning that target, Carter and the Blue Demons have traveled to tournaments all over, but there's just something about being able to compete in your own gym.

"It's nice because we can't have fans come and follow us to Delaware and Minnesota and wherever. So we get our fans, we get our middle schoolers involved in it, and everybody gets hyped up about it."

Also for the Blue Demons, Derek Woody claimed the 160-pound division while Braden Carter took 171, David Cheney took 189 and Jon Weber won 215.

That Christiansburg won wasn't surprising.

What was surprising was how high Carroll County finished.

The Cavaliers finished in third place, buoyed by Blake Bowman's 130-pound championship win over Christiansburg's Brady Epperly.

And the fact that Bowman got a win over a wrestler for the home team didn't elude him.

"That's a pretty big deal right there," he said. "I've wrestled him a couple times before in middle school and whatnot, but [to] come up here in front of this big old crowd they got because they've got a good program, you know."

Last year the Cavaliers were very young. They remain young but have more experience.

"We've all stepped it up this year," he said. "[The coaches] expect big things out of us."

The only other Timesland wrestler to win a championship was Andrew Miller of Bassett who survived a brutal contest with Carroll County's Drew McCraw to earn the 3-2 decision.
