Teams work for position in Big Blue Wrestling Tournament
While Christiansburg has a comfortable lead, there are plenty of teams in contention for second.
CHRISTIANSBURG -- The scene at Christiansburg High School's Big Blue Invitational on Friday in Day 1 of the tournament was about what you'd expect from such a production.
Parents, students and coaches cramming next to one another, standing on tip-toes and screaming every time the officials slapped the mat for a pin.
And things are wide open going into today.
But here's something else: For those that are uninitiated to the world of wrestling, first-day scores aren't that important.
This will come as a shock to anyone who's ever punched a hole in the wall after watching their favorite football team go down 35-0 at halftime.
But in wrestling, there's a lot of ground to cover and today is when things get interesting.
Ask any coach about the first-day scores and you'll get an answer similar to this one:
"It's early in the tournament to look at the score," said Carroll County coach Jason Morris. "We got a lot of good matches coming up.
"I'm really impressed by the way our kids are wrestling. They're wrestling well."
There you have it. Most coaches are more concerned with how their kids are doing individually.
Reporters aren't coaches, though, and Christiansburg has a large lead over the competition. But things are knotted up right behind them.
The Blue Demons amassed a first-day score of 92 but the next nine teams are all within seven points of each other.
Among those are Patrick County (seven points out of second), Glenvar (11 back) and Blacksburg (also 11 back).
Christiansburg coach Daryl Weber said that it was due to the varied competition that attends the Big Blue.
"That's what's so great about this tournament. You got different classes of patrons, you got people from different states all showing up and definitely, you see different styles [of wrestling] that prepare you for the state tournament," he said.
Apparently though, teams get a much better idea on Day 2.
"Early in the tournament ... you're gonna have guys having a lot of success," Weber said. "Once you get into the quarterfinals, there's gonna be a lot of stuff happening."
Former Bassett coach and current Patrick County coach Stephen Biedrycki brought his team here for its first taste of the Big Blue and stated why there's not much one can really glean from the first day's team scores:
"There's so many different levels of wrestling going on," he said.
"You've got the ones that have been doing it for four or five years now, and you've got a second- or first-year wrestler. It takes a while to sort that out.
"The second day will really be the day that'll tell you where everything falls out."
Biedrycki then went on to agree with the other coaches about how this tournament prepares his team for what lies ahead.
"We need to be here to see some of the higher quality levels of wrestling in the state so that we have kind of a vision or an idea of where we need to be heading," he said.
His Cougars, and everyone else that stuffed themselves into that gym, got a good look at quality wrestling.
They also got to see the team scores even if they don't matter until after today.
Wrestling continues at 9 a.m. today, with the finals set to begin at 6 p.m.
