High school basketball roundup

ROCKY GAP -- Laurel Hankins scored 29 points to lead Bland County to a 79-77 win over Fort Chiswell in a Mountain Empire District girls' basketball game Friday.

Fort Chiswell went on a 14-6 run to grab a 68-67 lead with less than four minutes to go, but the Bears answered with six straight points to take a 73-68 lead with less than two minutes to go. The Bears led the rest of the way.

Hankins made one of two free throws to extend the lead to 79-77 with one second to go.

Kirby Mustard scored 17 points for the Bears.

Kendra Vaughn scored 24 points for Fort Chiswell, with Christina Shockley adding 18 points. Nancy Thacker chipped in 17 points and Carlyta Hamm 13 points.

The Spartans managed to hold onto the lead despite missing four foul shots in the final two minutes.

Fort Defiance was perfect from the line in the final minute of the game, converting on all six free-throw attempts.

Rockbridge County tied the game with just over two minutes to play before Hoffman took matters into his own hands.

David Early scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half for Rockbridge while also grabbing 12 rebounds on the night.
