High school roundup: Christiansburg rallies late to top Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG -- Brendan Motley had 14 points and four steals, and D.J.  Palmer added 13 and Christiansburg's boys basketball team used a big  fourth quarter to beat Blacksburg 54-49, the Blue Demons' first win  over the Bruins since the 1999-2000 season.

Christiansburg trailed by five going into the last period, but  rallied with the help of 3-pointers by sophomore Stephen Wills and  freshmen Motley and Josh Hinkle. Motley also had a key blocked shot in  the quarter, as Christiansburg outscored the Bruins 19-9.

Reece Whitsett had 17 points to lead Blacksburg.

PEARISBURG -- Caleb Tilley drilled a 3-pointer midway through the  fourth quarter after the Highlanders cut a 17-point deficit to one  point and the Spartans held on in their district opener.

Lucas Jackson scored 23 points to lead Giles, which made 12 of 14  free throws in the fourth quarter. Tilley added 16 points and Andy  Randel had 13.

Jonathan McGhee paced Glenvar with 21 points, while Dakota Barlow added 10.

MARTINSVILLE -- Ronwyn Pritchett muscled his way to 20 points as  the Bulldogs handed the Wildcats their second loss of the season.

Jarez Turner added 11 points for Martinsville, while Demetries Jones added 10.

Steven McClanahan led Montcalm with 18 points, while David Kolb added 12.
