Bassett overcomes late run by Hidden Valley

A furious rally attempt in the final seconds by Hidden Valley's boys basketball team fell one basket short, as visiting Bassett held on for a 53-52 win on Friday night.

The Titans' Chad Earhart hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left to cut the Bengals' lead to one.

Bassett missed both free throws after the Titans fouled on the ensuing play, but Hidden Valley couldn't get a good look at the basket and the Bengals survived.

James Turner led Bassett (4-3) with 11 points.

Earhart finished with 14 points, while Andrew Morris scored 15 to lead Hidden Valley (2-7), which trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half.

MONETA -- Jon Zimmerman made the game-winning shot at the buzzer and the Terriers beat the Golden Eagles.

With the game tied at 41, Zimmerman, who finished with five points, grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up to seal the win.

Frank Miller paced William Byrd with 11 points.

Wesley Gates had a game-high 16 points for Staunton River.

BLACKSBURG -- The smaller Cave Spring team slowed the tempo down and led for most of the first half, but Blacksburg took the lead back at the end of third quarter and won the district opener for both teams.

Mallory Jones and Katy Kipps both stepped up in the fourth quarter to help the Bruins put the game away. Jones scored six of her 16 points, and Kipps had eight of her 10 points in that quarter.

Monica Boatwright led the Knights with a game-high 21 points. She was 8-for-10 from the foul line.

BASSETT -- Iesha Smith and Sarah Hubbard each scored 11 points to help Basset hold off the Vikings.

The Bengals held a 37-22 lead at the end of the third quarter, but Northside refused to go away, outscoring Bassett 22-13 in the final period.

The Vikings' Morgan Allen led all scorers with 14 points, while Khaia Jones added 11 points.
