Daniels, Colonels feel good after win

Stephanie Klein-Davis | The Roanoke Times
William Fleming's Troy Daniels and Eric Thomas go up for a rebound in the first half against Gar-Field's Jeremiah Johnson.
Troy Daniels qualified as "sick" by two definitions of the word Monday. In slang where sick is a high compliment, he was worthy of such praise. And he was quite ill.
In the championship of the Member One Holiday Hoopla tournament at the Salem Civic Center, Daniels fought through nausea and led William Fleming to a hard-fought 47-42 win over plucky Gar-Field.
Once it was over, Daniels' teammates enjoyed a locker room celebration while their leading scorer lost his pregame snack. On the court, Daniels didn't let on that he wasn't feeling his best. He scored a team-high 17 points, including three 3-pointers.
"I played through it," Daniels said.
Gar-Field (5-5) played to keep the score low, a strategy Fleming coach Mickey Hardy said was the right move.
"We wanted to play a game in the 60s, and we know they wanted to play a game in the 40s," Hardy said. "We tried to force the pace, but when we saw how it was playing, we knew we would have to play defense."
Fleming (8-0) played tenacious defense, especially in the low post. Big man Jamelle Hagins did not have a big night scoring, but he cleaned the glass for 10 rebounds. Eric Thomas also had 10 boards for the Colonels, many of them on the offensive end.
Fleming played a man-to-man defense that Hardy said was disguised as a box and one.
The defender on Gar-Field's senior guard Kwasi Amponsah was assigned to play inside his jersey, while the rest of the Colonels gave their assignments more room. Despite having more looks, the younger Indians were in no hurry to shoot, preferring a patient game of waiting for Amponsah or Jeremiah Johnson to come free. Through the game's first 21 minutes, Amponsah and Johnson were the only Gar-Field players who had scored.
Guards Shaquan Manning and Stephon Anderson spent most of the night hounding Amponsah, and while the Gar-Field senior ended with 14 points, nothing came easy.
Gar-Field head coach Andy Gray said his team lacks depth and playing in its third game in four days has been hard. Still, the Indians mounted a late charge as they cut a nine-point lead to three in the final minute, forcing turnovers, gaining offensive rebounds and hitting clutch shots.
"They present match-up problems for us," Gray said. "They're so big inside, it was like the abominable snowman against Frosty the Snowman. If we extend to Daniels, that leaves the inside more open. We got steals twice there at the end, then threw it right to them."
Gray opted for the crowded lane approach, leaving Daniels to be the focus of the Fleming offense. Hagins was held scoreless in the first half.

But a 50-foot heave by Cave's Quentin Dill found the net as the buzzer sounded and sent the Knights to the locker room with a six-point lead.
