Botetourt tops Martinsville despite short-handed roster
The Cavaliers go to the semifinals after winning their first-round game with an eight-man roster.
With just an eight-man roster and facing a team that has plenty of athletes, the Lord Botetourt boys basketball team might have been forgiven if thoughts of making a run for it flitted through their heads.
Instead the short-handed Cavaliers decided they were not, in fact, undermanned and instead ran right at the Martinsville Bulldogs.
Rick Alderman scored a career-high 34 points as Lord Botetourt pressured Martinsville the whole game and scored a 67-59 victory in the opening round of the Northside Invitational Tournament at Northside High School on Saturday.
The Cavaliers will face tournament host Northside in the semifinals on Monday at 7:45 p.m.
Franklin County will play Liberty in the other semifinal game starting at 6 p.m.
Blacksburg and William Byrd will meet in the consolation bracket at 2:30 p.m. Monday followed by Martinsville against Staunton River at 4:15 p.m.
The championship game will be played Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. at Northside, with the third place game at 6 p.m. and the consolation final at 4:15.
Lord Botetourt coach Jon Cook said having today off will be good for his team, but Alderman likes to run.
"We've got eight guys so we've got to keep in shape," Alderman said. "We run and play hard."
Alderman also had seven rebounds and four assists.
Hunter Foley had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers, and Matt Moats blocked seven shots.
Jarez Turner led Martinsville with 15 points. Demetrius Jones and Ronwyn Pritchett each added nine.

Chris Harman scored eight of his game-high 22 points in the final 4:37 as the Minutemen held off a rallying William Byrd squad.
Liberty was up by seven, 49-42, going into the fourth quarter, but the Terriers opened the quarter on a 9-2 run capped by a driving layup by Wesley Brugh to tie the score at 51. From there it was nip and tuck, with the Terriers even taking a two-point lead on a pair of free throws by Bradley Mattox with 3:43 to play.
But Justin Martin drove in for a layup on the other end to retie the score, then after a turnover, dished to Ryan Nichols for another score.
Then the Minutemen turned to Harman to press the pedal down. He scored on a reverse layup, then drove in for another score and netted a three-point play to stretch the lead to seven points with 1:47 to go. Anthony Reynolds, who'd been gobbling up clutch defensive rebounds for Liberty, stole the ball and fed Harman for a fastbreak layup and the game was safely out of the Terriers' reach.
Nichols scored 14 points for Liberty and Reynolds, Calton Payne and Martin each scored nine.
