Franklin County girls win in record fashion

ROCKY MOUNT -- Franklin County established a new school scoring record in rolling to a 94-74 victory over North Stafford on Saturday in the Franklin County tournament.

The Eagles outscored their guests 60-40 in the second half to win decisively.

Brittany Nelms paced the high-flying hosts with 26 points. Miranda Smith netted 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out six assists. Desirae Jamison scored 17.

Point guard Shea Smith scored 11 points, handed out 11 assists and grabbed nine rebounds for Franklin County.

Post Samanta Ingram led North Stafford with 21 points, but was quieted somewhat in the second half as Borirka Burwell, Malerie Hunter and ShiShi Hancock took turns guarding the physical 6-footer.

Ingram also had 11 rebounds for North Stafford.

Morgan Shrader added 10 points for Christiansburg and Daniella Motley grabbed 12 rebounds to go with eight points.

Samantha Webster led William Byrd with 12 points.

MONETA -- Liberty Christian edged Salem 34-31 in the championship dual to win the River Rumble dual meet tournament at Staunton River High School.

Staunton River finished third overall, beating Radford 40-24 in its final match.

Liberty Christian beat Patrick Henry, Staunton River and James River to reach the final.

Salem got there by beating Roanoke Catholic, E.C. Glass and Radford.
