Boggs gets surgery today

The Roanoke Times | File March
Hidden Valley senior and reigning Timesland boys basketball player of the year Ben Boggs will have surgery on his broken leg today.
Hidden Valley basketball star Ben Boggs is scheduled to undergo surgery today on his broken right leg, Titans coach Troy Wells said Tuesday.
Boggs -- a Virginia Tech signee and the reigning Timesland player of the year -- broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg during the third quarter Friday night's 62-51 victory over visiting Northside when he scored on a baseline drive and fell to the floor.
Wells said the bones in Boggs' leg have been reset and that doctors are optimistic about the 6-foot-3 guard's recovery. Boggs was at home Tuesday after spending time at Lewis-Gale Medical Center this weekend.
"The doctors assured him the bones would reset stronger than they were before," Wells said. "That's pretty amazing when you think about what happened."
Northside coach Bill Pope said he has reviewed slow-motion video of the injury several times and said it appears that Boggs landed on a teammate's foot.
Wells said he has not watched the video replay.
"We haven't looked at the film, and Ben doesn't want to see it," the Hidden Valley coach said. "He's at home now. He's still in some pain. He's comfortable. But he's still dealing with the roller-coaster aspect of everything."
Hidden Valley (1-1) does not play another home game until January. The Titans travel to Franklin County tonight and visit Brookville on Saturday in a makeup game. In another scheduling change, Hidden Valley will play Brookville at home Jan. 3.
Boggs led Hidden Valley to back-to-back Group AA semifinal appearances, averaging 17.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
He's is Hidden Valley's career scoring and rebounding leader.
Wells, who took the Hidden Valley job this summer after leading Martinsville to three VHSL Group AA championships, said the Titans' players and coaches are still grappling with the loss of Boggs.
"We're still struggling with it some," Wells said. "The kind of player he is, we're trying to get things together.
"We're trying everything from A to Z. Hopefully some kids will step up, then we'll need to get some work done over Christmas.
So many times you take things for granted that everything will be all right until it's not. We're hopeful and prayerful that everything goes well."
Ellenbogen relocating temporarily to Florida
Blacksburg golfer Courtney Ellenbogen, who has helped the Bruins to three straight Group AA championships, will spend several months in Florida this winter.
Blacksburg coach Doug Day said Ellenbogen -- a Duke signee -- is moving to the Sunshine State to enroll in another high school and work on her golf game. Day said Ellenbogen plans to return to Blacksburg in the spring and graduate with her class.
"She'll be coming back to graduate," Day said. "She just wants to be able to play golf day-in and day-out and not have to worry about cold weather."
