Amherst Co.'s Lancers have field day against Jefferson Forest's Cavs in football playoffs
Amherst County's ground attack notches five TDs against stagnant Jefferson Forest.
AMHERST -- Football fields are 100 yards in length, but Amherst County wouldn't know that if this game was its only point of reference.
That's because the Lancers dominated the field position battle and cruised to a 40-10 win over Jefferson Forest in the Division 4 Region III championship at Amherst County High School on Friday night.
On every punt, it seemed, the Lancers (11-1) were able to produce a big play courtesy of Chris McDaniel or Mario Vaughan to set up easy touchdowns.
There was also a botched punt that set up excellent Lancers field position.
"We didn't play special teams at all," said Jefferson Forest coach Don Rice. "The biggest thing was we got behind and we couldn't come back because our special teams were putting us in a hole all the time."
It also didn't help that Jefferson Forest couldn't move the ball. The Cavaliers didn't get a first down until 34 seconds left in the first half.
By contrast, Amherst County piled up 236 rushing yards and had rushing touchdowns from four different players.
Wayne Farmer scored twice on the ground while A.J. Parrish, Tyrease Brown and Vaughan each added a scoring run.
Anthony Rose also threw a touchdown pass on his only attempt of the game to McDaniel.
"We had to come out of the locker room and really set the tempo early," said Lancers coach Cecil Phillips. "And our defense did a very good job and we got up a little bit early and that helped take some steam out of their engine."
That engine never got started.
"We didn't execute in certain aspects of the game and they just capitalized on them," said Jefferson Forest senior fullback Tyler Rosser.
Jefferson Forest (9-4) didn't get its only touchdown -- an eight-yard run by Brandon Harrison -- until there was just over a minute left in the game.
The Cavalier players were upset but still proud of making it this far.
"We definitely had doubters and we had doubters as we were winning and we proved it by getting here," said senior tight end Dustin Engledove. "I wish we would've done better, but we're here."
Amherst County moves on to play in the Group AA Division 4 semifinals while the Cavaliers are left to reflect on their last game of the season.
"It was a good run, that's really all it is," said Engledove. "I had a lot of fun with this team. I love everybody on this team."
