HILLSVILLE -- Reigning Timesland offensive player of the year Rashawn Woods threw two touchdown passes to lead Bassett to a 28-7 season-opening nondistrict victory over Carroll County on Friday.
Woods connected with running back O'Shane Valentine on scoring passes of 11 and 5 yards in the second quarter.
Woods also rushed for 67 yards on 14 carries, and Valentine gained 55 yards on seven carries.
Tyler Martin kicked two field goals for the Bengals.
Dylan Caveness led Carroll County with 74 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.

Tazewell 21, George Wythe 19
WYTHEVILLE -- Matt Muncy ran for a touchdown and returned a kickoff 96 yards for another score to lead the Bulldogs to a nondistrict win.
Aaron Wheeler of George Wythe scored on a 7-yard run to cut the lead to 21-19 with 11:15 to go.
But a 25-yard field-goal attempt by the Maroons' Michael Jones was blocked with two minutes to go. Jones' 51-yard attempt was short in the waning seconds.
George Wythe was hurt in the second quarter by a missed extra-point kick by Jones and an incomplete conversion pass by Jacob Sharitz.
Sharitz completed 15 of 25 passes for 241 yards. Teammate Jonathan Turpin ran for 75 yards on seven carries.
Drew Lester returned a fumble 51 yards for a touchdown for George Wythe.
Casey Lockhart threw for 171 yards and one TD for Tazewell. Brandon Pauley caught four passes for 134 yards and one TD.

GALAX -- Tyler Houk rushed for 266 yards and four touchdowns on seven carries to lead the Maroon Tide past Northwood (0-1).
Houk also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
Devae Goins had 15 tackles and one sack while Jerad Brown recorded two interceptions to lead Galax (1-0) on defense.

RURAL RETREAT -- Chris Rodriguez rushed for 186 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries to lead the Pioneers to a nondistrict win.
Fort Chiswell picked off three passes and recovered two Rural Retreat fumbles. The Indians were held to 149 yards of total offense.

CHRISTIANSBURG -- The Blue Demons went inside and outside to rush for 465 yards on 43 attempts and held off a late comeback for the nondistrict victory.
Fullback Keith Johnson piled up 214 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns. Tailbacks Greg Lee and Ryan Fisher went outside for 124 and 143 yards, respectively.
Graham's last score came with 40 seconds left. The G-Men tried an onside kick but it went out of bounds and Christiansburg ran out the clock.

MARION -- Curtis Williams scored three touchdowns and rushed for 164 yards on 16 carries to lead Chilhowie in the nondistrict opener.
Williams scored on runs of 63 and 18 yards and caught a 27-yard pass for a score from Josh Jackson.
Marion, which was led by Brock Hanna's 137 rushing yards on 16 carries, had the ball with two minutes to go and drove to midfield, but an interception with 58 seconds left ended the comeback bid.
