West gets baseball win
NEWPORT NEWS -- A stellar pitching performance by Princess Anne graduate Ben Tomchick went to waste Thursday.
Halifax County's Justin Bagbey hit a three-run double in a four-run fifth inning that spurred the West to a 7-6 win over the East at Captains Park in the VHSCA All-Star game.
Bagbey, named the West MVP, went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs. But the future Chowan University player struck out against Tomchick in his first at-bat.
"Well, I went up there in my first at-bat and I was a little nervous," Bagbey said. "But after that, I started seeing the ball real well and tried to put my best swing on it and luckily I hit a couple of good ones."
Tomchick was East MVP.
The West scored two runs in the fourth off pitcher Dustin Galbraith. A double by Bagbey scored one of those runs.
After Galbraith redeemed himself by hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to put the East up 4-2, the West scored four more runs in the fifth. Bagbey hit his second double, this one bringing in three runs to put the West up 6-4.
Zack Helgeson from Hidden Valley and Caleb Dorton from James River each had a hit.
SOFTBALL
East 6, West 1
The East won the softball all-star game for the eighth straight year.
Only one of the East's runs was earned. It was a nine-inning game, as scheduled.
The West managed only three hits.
Leading 2-1, the East scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to build a cushion. The West committed three errors in the bottom of the eighth.
West starter Meredith Buckley (Glenvar) pitched the first four innings, allowing two hits while striking out three. She allowed two runs, one earned.
Virginia Tech recruit Abbie Rexrode (James River) pitched the rest of the way, allowing three hits while striking out six. She gave up four runs, all unearned.
The West had a number of players not playing in their normal positions, which contributed to its defensive gaffes.
