East girls, boys shut out West
NEWPORT NEWS -- For Cox goalkeeper Kristen Carden, Wednesday night's East-West girls' all-star soccer matchup was her favorite kind of game.
In a game decided by penalty kicks, the East beat the West 1-0 at Christopher Newport University.
Carden, who will play at Virginia Tech in the fall, said she has never lost a game on penalty kicks.
Carden recorded 10 saves for the East and played in goal the entire game.
Thanks to a flurry of shots in the game's final minutes, the West out-shot the East 17-9.
In the net for the West, Ericka Troia recorded three saves, and Desi Simmons added three saves of her own.
The East edged the West in penalty kicks 4-3.
Deep Run forward Brian Ownby scored twice to lead the East to a 3-0 victory over the West in the all-star boys' soccer game.
Ownby scored in the 13th minute and again in the 55th minute, looking every bit deserving of the Division I soccer scholarship he received to play at the University of Virginia in the fall.
Ownby earned the MVP award for the East.
The East out-shot the West 14-9. Goalkeepers Ariel Brown and Scott Zaring had two saves apiece.
Ownby finished his career with 57 goals and 31 assists.
East takes volleyball too
NEWPORT NEWS -- The East won the VHSCA all-star game 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18) at CNU on Wednesday.
The East was led by Cox's Kim Maroon and Loudoun County's Morgan Petkovich, both of whom will play volleyball at Villanova University.
Petkovich, the East MVP, finished with a game-high 14 kills.
Colonial Forge's Bianca Richardson was named the West MVP.
