Sweep for West in basketball
HAMPTON -- Hidden Valley's Luke Hancock called it his "last hurrah."
Hancock scored 17 points and helped the West squad rally for a 92-90 victory over the East in the Virginia High School Coaches Association boys' basketball all-star game Tuesday night at Hampton Coliseum.
Hancock, who is headed to Hargrave Military Academy, hit some key 3-pointers and had a crowd-pleasing drive and dunk in the final two minutes that helped spur the West's late comeback.
"It was my last hurrah, so I was really just trying to be competitive," Hancock said. "People probably didn't think the West had a chance because the East had all the Triple-A players and all the athletes."
Hancock was joined on the West squad by George Wythe's Tennis Simon (12 points), Blacksburg's Nick English (eight points), Pulaski County's Jared King (seven points), James River's Corey Ware (six points) and Bassett's Josh McGill (five points).
King hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to give the West a one-point lead.
George Washington's Nick Barbour scored 25 points and was named West MVP.
In the girls' all-star game, the West won 98-53.
Hidden Valley's Abby Oliver finished with 13 points, while Pulaski's Teonika Webb, Hidden Valley's Kylee Beecher and Bassett's Kristen Keith each finished with eight points.
Waynesboro's Devon Brown was named the West MVP after scoring 17 points.
