Vikings win district title

Bitsy Lawhorn singled-in Caitlyn Sigmon in the bottom of the sixth inning as Northside (10-6-1, 4-1-1) needed, defeating Alleghany 1-0 to win the Blue Ridge District softball title.

Tamara Smith tossed a shutout, scattering five hits while striking out nine.

The district title is Northside's ninth regular-season title in 10 years.

William Byrd 6, Lord Botetourt 1

DALEVILLE -- Jessica Mahoney tossed a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts as the Terriers won. Amber Altice went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Byrd (13-6-1, 3-2-1). Lindsey Cuba went 3-for-3 for the Cavaliers (5-15, 1-5).

RIVER RIDGE DISTRICT

Salem 11, Christiansburg 2

Salem's (15-5, 8-2) Ellen Weaver fanned 19 batters and allowed just one earned run. Dani Hinkly notched the Demons' (4-14, 1-6) only RBI with a double in the second inning.

Hidden Valley 4, Pulaski Co. 0

Sarah Cutwright's home run in the fifth inning capped the Titans' (15-4, 7-2) victory. Kari Myers had single and also scored a run for Hidden Valley. Heather Williams had two hits to pace the Cougars (13-6, 5-4).

Cave Spring 10, Blacksburg 0

Sarah Mitchell allowed just one hit and struck out 11 as Cave Spring blanked Blacksburg.

Olivia Ferguson led the Knights (15-4, 7-2), going 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs.

WESTERN VALLEY DISTRICT

Franklin Co. 18, E.C. Glass 0

LYNCHBURG -- Shi-Shi Hancock smacked a three-run homer in the first inning and finished with six RBIs as the Eagles clinched a tie for the district title.

Chezdan Baker went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Franklin County (15-4, 9-1).

THREE RIVERS DISTRICT

Floyd County 17, EastMont 0, 5 innings

FLOYD -- Marissa Bowman and Kelly Walters had three hits a piece and Jessi Hall had a three-run home run to lead the Buffaloes (13-7, 7-3). Kaitlyn Mills struck out 10 in the win.

BASEBALL

BLUE RIDGE DISTRICT

William Byrd 3, Lord Botetourt 2

Brandon Garnett went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored twice to lead the Terriers (11-9, 4-2).

Casey Weddle homered for Lord Botetourt.

Alleghany 6, Northside 2

LOW MOOR -- Kevin Peterson, Steven Keener, Steven Holt and Skyler Keene each had two hits for Alleghany (17-1, 4-1).

Roger Ingraham was 2-for-3 to lead Northside (12-6, 3-3).

MOUNTAIN EMPIRE DISTRICT

Galax 18, Narrows 14

NARROWS -- Morgan Holder and Scott Alouf each went 2-for-3 as Galax outlasted Narrows in a back-and-forth game. Jake Craft went 3-for-6, while Wesley Ferguson went 2-for-2 for the Maroons.

PIONEER DISTRICT

James River 13, Craig County 0, 5 innings

BUCHANAN -- Aaron Allen gave up two hits and struck out eight for the Knights, (15-3, 8-0) who clinched the district title for the fourth consecutive year.

RIVER RIDGE DISTRICT

Blacksburg 13, Cave Spring 9

BLACKSBURG -- Joey Phillips and Eric Houff each had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Bruins (13-6, 6-3) past the Knights (6-11, 4-5). Greg Juanarena also recorded three hits for Blacksburg.

Hidden Valley 7, Pulaski Co. 1

DUBLIN -- Mikey O'Brien drove in two runs in the first inning and added three RBIs in the seventh to lead Hidden Valley (16-3, 8-1).

Dustin Dalton drove in the only run for Pulaski County (12-6, 4-5).

Christiansburg 4, Salem 3

CHRISTIANSBURG -- Nate Hiner singled in Jared Looney and Matt Garnand in the bottom of the seventh to cap the comeback win for the Blue Demons (8-11, 2-7). Brad Cox tossed a complete game to lead Christiansburg to a second straight district win. Carter Williamson went 2-for-3 and drove in all three runs for Salem (6-12, 3-6).

SEMINOLE DISTRICT

Liberty 9, Brookville 1

BEDFORD -- Anthony Cottrell was 4-for-4 with five RBIs, and Ethan Tanner was 2-for-2 with two doubles for Liberty. Jake Tanner gave up two hits and struck out eight in five innings for Liberty (7-11, 6-6).

WESTERN VALLEY DISTRICT

Patrick Henry 13, William Fleming 4

Zach Whitaker scattered five hits over six innings to pick up the victory. Clayton Metz had two hits to go along with two stolen bases and two runs scored for the Patriots (5-15, 3-7).

HOGOHEEGEE DISTRICT

Chilhowie 7, George Wythe 0

CHILHOWIE -- Aaron Clampitt hurled a three hitter, while Scott Pennington tallied two hits and three RBIs to lead the Warriors (13-5, 7-1). George Wythe's (7-7, 5-3) Michael Jones had a double in the loss.

THREE RIVERS DISTRICT

Auburn 8, Radford 6

RINER -- Luke Watson hit a two-run single to put Auburn (9-10, 4-6) ahead for good in the bottom of the third inning and Nathan Vaughn struck out 12 for the Eagles.

Floyd County 8, Eastern Montgomery 2

ELLISTON -- Luke Harris struck out 13 batters for the Buffaloes (5-15, 4-6). Justin Shelton had three hits to lead the Mustangs (2-12, 1-9).

NORTHWEST REGION

Patrick Henry 5, Woodbridge 2

WOODBRIDGE -- Patrick Henry won the first four singles matches and the sole doubles match to advance to today's semifinals.

BLUE RIDGE DISTRICT

Team semifinals

Lord Botetourt and Alleghany posted convincing 6-1 and 6-2 victories over William Byrd and Northside, respectively, at Walrond Park in the team semifinals of the district tournament.

They will play the team final at 2 p.m. today at William Byrd.

Nathan Anderson and Thomas Parker of Alleghany and Bret Calloway and Tim Hudgins of Lord Botetourt advanced to the doubles championship at 2 p.m. today at William Byrd with straight-set victories in the semifinals.

RIVER RIDGE DISTRICT

Semifinals

Cave Spring senior Ryan Davis defeated Hidden Valley's Sammy Schwartz 6-0, 6-3, while Salem freshman Patrick O'Keefe edged Blacksburg's Kevin Petersen 6-4, 6-0 to reach today's singles championship at Virginia Tech.

Davis was last year's singles runner-up to Hidden Valley's Ed Arsura.

Davis and Tallman McBride of Cave Spring will play O'Keefe and Laven Newsom of Salem in the doubles final.

SOUTHERN VALLEY DISTRICT

Team semifinal

LEXINGTON -- German exchange student Dominik Lehmann remained unbeaten at the No. 1 singles position as Rockbridge County topped Stuarts Draft 7-2 in a team semifinal at Lexington Golf and Country Club.

Lehmann, Will Rush, Joe Crittenden, Ty Ashworth and Matt Kiser all scored singles wins for Rockbridge, which hosts R.E. Lee in today's championship match.

Both teams have qualified for the Region III tournament. The Wildcats will play a regional quarterfinal at home Monday.

SEMINOLE DISTRICT

Team final, doubles semifinal

AMHERST -- Matt Courtney and James Ellett won three-set matches to lift Jefferson Forest to a 5-2 victory over Brookville for the team championship at Amherst Middle School. Jefferson Forest will play at Alleghany in a Region III quarterfinal Monday. Josh Ranowsky and Tyler Johnston advanced to today's doubles final with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Liberty's Dave Thomas and Tavon Ware.

Semifinals

Laura Dodson of Cave Spring and Kristin Harter of Hidden Valley combined to drop three games in semifinal victories and will meet in today's 2:30 singles final at Virginia Tech.

Dodson remained unbeaten on the season by ousting Caroline Hunter of Salem 6-0, 6-1, while Harter eliminated Brittany Rivero 6-2, 6-0.

The doubles final will pit Dodson and Cave Spring's Piper Hagan against Harter and Whitney Walton of Hidden Valley.

BLUE RIDGE DISTRICT

Semifinals

Northside defeated William Byrd in straight sets to advance to the championship match. Ashley Masterson lead the way, defeating Miranda Sowder 6-0, 6-1.

The Vikings will meet Lord Botetourt, which defeated Alleghany 5-1 as Bethany Sass who recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rachelle Casstevens.

Sass and Mackenzie Tyree of Lord Botetourt advanced to the doubles championship where they will face Northside's team of Masterson and Rachel Fertitta.

NORTHWEST REGION

Loudoun Valley 6, Patrick Henry 0

Patrick Henry's (9-8) season came to an end as Loudoun Valley swept six singles matches in straight sets in a victory in Purcellville.

Ryan Palmieri, Nick Palmieri and Jeremy Ritter all scored as the Vikings (9-4-2, 4-1) clinched the district title.

DUBLIN -- Parker Walsh had a hat trick for the Titans (10-2-1, 6-2-1).

CHRISTIANSBURG -- Brittan Young and Mohammod Issa both scored goals to lead the Blue Demons (6-8-1, 4-5-0).

Blacksburg 2, Cave Spring 1

BLACKSBURG -- Michael Breske and Tim Becker each scored a goal to help the Bruins (15-0, 9-0) escape with a win.

FLOYD -- Five different Dayspring players scored as the Lions rolled to a road victory.

LOW MOOR -- Brittany Akers scored two goals to lead the Vikings.

Colleen Schrier scored two goals and Katelyn LePore added a goal and an assist to lead Lord Botetourt (14-2, 6-0).

Kelsay Meador scored the third goal for the Cavaliers and Krysten Brogan had six saves for the shutout.

Hidden Valley 12, Pulaski Co. 0

Kendall Robertson scored three goals for Hidden Valley (13-0, 9-0) , who clinched the regular-season district title.

Cave Spring 1, Blacksburg 0

Rachel Beaumont scored on Sarah Walton's corner kick just three minutes into the game and the Knights (9-3-1, 5-4) held on.

Kelsey Fuller made four saves for the Bruins (7-8, 3-6).

TRACK AND FIELD

LYNCHBURG -- Staunton River's James Bell cleared 14 feet, 1 inch in the pole vault to highlight the opening day of the district meet at Brookville High School.

Liberty's Tyler Hatcher took the boys' shot put with a toss of 47-11 12. Brookville opened a 118-54 lead in the team standings.

Laura Rapp of Heritage outdueled Brookville's Janel Reeves by less than two seconds to win the 3,200 meters in 11:02.87 in the girls' meet.

Brookville holds a 64 14-56 12 lead over Amherst County heading into Thursday's final events.

BOYS' LACROSSE

WESTERN VALLEY DISTRICT

Patrick Henry 10, E.C. Glass 7

Kyle Smith notched three goals and three assists for the Patriots (7-5), who were facing a must-win situation.

William Barrows added three goals, while Avery Thomas made 19 saves for Patrick Henry.

The victory forces a one-game playoff between Patrick Henry and E.C. Glass for the district title.

JEFFERSON DISTRICT

Salem 11, Charlottesville 8

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Daniel Dyer, Jimmy Buriak and Korey Gaines each scored two goals to lead Salem into the district championship game against Western Albemarle.

CROZET -- Laura Prasnicki scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Wildcats advance to the district championship Thursday at Western Albermarle High School. Ryan Rotanz scored five goals for Salem (13-3)
