Rebel boys, girls sweep track titles

Top 100 recruits for 2008
EMORY -- Ronnie Groves won four events to power Patrick Henry-Glade Spring to a sweep of Hogoheegee District track and field titles on the Rebels' home track Saturday.
Groves took the 100 meters (11.54), 200 (23.74), high jump (6-4) and triple jump (45-234) as PH outscored Chilhowie 185-80 to win the boys' meet. Trey Johnson added victories in the 110 hurdles (15.43) and 300 hurdles (40.22) for the Rebels.
PH edged Rural Retreat 151-128 in the girls' meet. Brittany Bryant (1,600, 3,200) and Cassie Tibbs (shot put, discus) were double winners for PH. Amanda Vance won the 100 and 200 for Chilhowie.
Southern Track Classic
RICHMOND -- William Fleming's Kayla Lewis, Staunton River's Sarah Witt and Blacksburg's Peter Dorrell scored victories Friday night in the Southern Track Classic at Sports Backers Stadium.
Lewis won the girls' shot put (41-0 feet), while Witt took the 300 hurdles (45.42 seconds) and Dorrell captured the 1,600 meters (4:14.46).
William Byrd's Drew Hall set a 2008 Timesland best in the boys 800, finishing second in 1:53.80. Other second-place finishes were turned in by James River's DaVon Ross in the high jump (6-6), James River's Sawyer Russell in the discus (156-10) and Cave Spring's Tim Smith in the 3,200 (9:19.66).
Cave Spring's Aimee Veatch was third in the girls' discus (127-0), while Staunton River's James Bell was third in the pole vault (14-6).
New River Invitational
PEARISBURG -- Sasha King set meet records in the 100 and 200 meters Friday night to lead Giles to the girls team title in the New River Invitational.
King won the 100 in 12.90 seconds and came back to take the 200 in 26.42. Giles outscored runner-up Pulaski County 146-60 to win the meet.
Pulaski County's Sabrina Hall set a meet record in the 3,200 (11:26.63) and also won the 1,600 (5:23.24). Christiansburg's Brittany Bostwick set a meet record in the long jump (17-734).
Auburn topped Radford 98-69 for the boys title as Tyler Wood won the triple jump and 300 hurdles.
Floyd County's Kent Moles set a meet record in the discus (154-7). Grayson County's Michael Davis (1,600, 3,200), and Fort Chiswell's Andrew Hamm (high jump, 20 0) also were double-winners.
Tennis
Western Valley District tournament
LYNCHBURG -- George Gianakos and Charlie Andrews of E.C. Glass needed an extra frame to defeat William Fleming's Monte Tiller and Matt Fink for the Western Valley District boys' doubles tennis title.
Gianakos and Andrews won the match 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, but Tiller, who won the district singles championship earlier this week, and Fink will still earn a birth to the regional tournament held later this month at E.C. Glass.
On the girls' side, Betsey Ezell and Anne Penn Cox of George Washington also needed a tiebreaking set to edge Shanna Luck and Taylor Edmonds of Halifax County.
Ezell, who was also a district singles champion, and Cox won with a final score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
GIRLS' SOCCER
VACA State Tournament
Christian Heritage 3, Shennandoah Valley 0
STEPHENS CITY -- Charlene Friel, Carrie Brooks and Emily Smith scored goals and Christian Heritage (9-5) won the third place game of the VACA state tournament.
Elizabeth Roller and Jaki Martin combined for a shutout in goal.
Western Valley District
Patrick Henry 2, Halifax County 2
SOUTH BOSTON -- Kathleen Peake and Scarlett Strickler both scored in the last 10 minutes of regulation to salvage a draw on Friday.
The Patriots (8-6-2, 4-2-2) are tied for second in the Western Valley District with Franklin County.
