Alleghany tops Byrd to open Blue Ridge play

Amanda Redmond scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, and Alleghany added two more runs in the top of the sixth to down William Byrd 3-0 in the Blue Ridge District softball opener for both teams Tuesday.
Stephanie Smith allowed just four hits and struck out nine for Alleghany's (9-3-1, 1-0).
Jessica Mahoney took the loss for the Terriers (10-2, 0-1).

Blue Ridge District
Northside 7, Lord Botetourt 1
DALEVILLE -- Tamera Smith went 2-for-4 with a three-run double to lead the Vikings (7-5).
Sara Maupin went 2-for-3 with a home run for the Cavaliers (4-11).
River Ridge District
Hidden Valley 10, Cave Spring 9, 9 innings
Hidden Valley's Kim McDow led off the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run. Then Sarah Cutright singled in Megan Lumbard.
Cave Spring's Meredith Moore countered with a solo home run to lead off the bottom half of the inning, but the Knights (10-4, 3-2) would add no more runs.
Moore finished with two hits and two RBIs.
Christiansburg 6, Blacksburg 1
BLACKSBURG -- The Demons took the lead for good with Brittany Broyles' three-run double in the top of the first inning.
Christiansburg's Nicole Hinkley and Emily Wallace combined to give up nine hits.
Colleen Henson and Nicole Holdaway each had two hits for the Bruins (2-11, 0-5), who had the bases loaded three times.
Salem 5, Pulaski County 2
Ellen Weaver pitched a complete game and struck out 19 batters while also hitting two doubles to lead Salem (9-4, 4-1).
Katie Stauffer had two hits and two RBIs. Abby Barnett and Caitlin Carr had RBI hits.
Andria Hill had an RBI for the Cougars.
Three Rivers District
Glenvar 11, Eastern Montgomery 0, 5 inn.
SHAWSVILLE -- Chasity Williams had a double and triple for the Highlanders.
Heather Phoenix pitched all five innings for the Mustangs (2-9, 0-6).

Patrick County 3, Tunstall 1
DRY FORK -- Kaitlyn Culler struck out four in seven innings for the Cougars (13-2, 5-1) and Chelsea Bradshaw had a triple.

ROCKY MOUNT -- India Metz went 3-for-3 with a triple and five RBIs to lead the host Eagles (10-3) past Holy Cross (7-4).
Sadie Wallace had two hits to go along with a RBI for Franklin County.
Jessica Brown allowed four hits, struck out nine and walked one over seven innings.

Northside 8, Lord Botetourt 0
Roger Ingraham went 3-for-4 and hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to break open the game for the Vikings (10-3, 1-0).
Northside's Daniel Moates struck out nine over seven innings and had a two-run single.
William Byrd 9, Alleghany 6
LOW MOOR -- Ryan Beyel went 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs for William Byrd.
Jon Zimmerman added a home run for the Terriers.
Skyler Keene had a three-RBI triple for Alleghany (11-1, 0-1).
River Ridge District
Hidden Valley 8, Cave Spring 0
Mikey O'Brien allowed four hits and struck out 13 to lead Hidden Valley (12-3, 4-1).
Brett Mollenhauer had two hits, scored three runs and drove in another.
Logan Blankenbeckler had a two-run double.
Cave Spring fell to 6-8, 2-2.
Salem 17, Pulaski Co. 7, 6 inn.
DUBLIN -- Brett DeMole, Josh Lawrence and Steve Tuell each had three hits for Salem, and Evan Fisher also homer for the Spartans, who scored in every inning.
Zach Chrisley had two hits for the Cougars (10-4, 3-2).
Western Valley District
Franklin Co. 10, GW 0, 6 inn.
ROCKY MOUNT -- Ryan Ward allowed two hits and struck out eight to earn his fifth win.
Johnathan France had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.
Casey Naff went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and
Javin Metz went 2-for-3 with one RBI for Franklin County (9-5, 3-2).
Adolfo Avael added a home run and two RBIs for Franklin County.

LYNCHBURG -- Lucian Grove, Kemper Steffe and Kenny Wright each had an RBI for Patrick Henry (4-11, 2-4).

Floyd County 3, Giles 1
FLOYD -- Luke Harris tossed a complete-game one-hitter, allowing an unearned run and striking out 13 to lead Floyd County (2-13, 1-5) and the Buffaloes scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go ahead for good.
Brandon Marshall scored two runs for the Buffaloes, while Travis Bolt had an RBI.
Joey Stevens had the only hit and scored the only run for Giles (7-9-1, 4-3).
Glenvar 6, Eastern Montgomery 0
Anthony Ratliff pitched a complete-game two-hitter with one walk and 10 strikeouts to lead the Highlanders (14-1, 7-0).
Dale Waldron was 2-for-2 for Glenvar.
Josh Leech and Seth Miller had the two hits for Eastern Montgomery.

Liberty 7, Heritage 5
BEDFORD -- Ethan Tanner went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Minutemen (4-9, 3-4) past the Pioneers (11-3, 6-2).
John Petersen and Aaron LaFon added two hits apiece for Liberty.
Hogoheegee District
Chilhowie 11, Northwood 1, 6 inn.
CHILHOWIE -- Marcus Little threw a complete-game two-hitter with seven strikeouts while adding two hits and scoring two runs for the Warriors (10-4, 5-1).
Cody Haga went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Josh Jackson hit two doubles and three RBIs.

Grayson County 15, Narrows 2, 5 innings
INDEPENDENCE -- Adam Bedsaul went 2-for-3 with a double and home run to lead the Blue Devils (11-3, 5-0).
Bedsaul finished with four RBIs, while Jessup Lambert added two hits for Grayson County.
Bland County 11, Galax 2
BLAND -- Bland County (5-9, 1-6) scored eight runs in the first inning and Dakota Crouse threw a three-hitter.
Cody Blessing had three hits and five RBIs to lead the Bears. Crouse went 3-for-4 and Nathan Cox went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Todd Nichols had a hit and an RBI to lead Galax.

Roanoke Catholic 6, Westover Christian 5
Josh Greer doubled in Blake Camarillo for the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for Catholic (4-8, 4-6).
Greer and Eon Potere each had two hits to lead the Celtics, while David DeLeon earned the win, pitching all seven innings.

PENN LAIRD -- Jack Wade led off with a double to spark Spotswood's four-run first inning.
Nick Balisteri was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two singles and scored a run for Rockbridge County, while Rylen Newcomb went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Chase Vail tallied a goal and two assists to lift the Terriers (7-3, 1-0) over the Mountaineers (8-2, 1-1).
Chase Barnett added a goal and an assist for Byrd. Brennon Johnson also scored.
River Ridge District
Hidden Valley 3, Cave Spring 0
Will Gooding scored two goals and Chris Van Thiel added one for the Titans. (8-0-2, 4-0)
Knights keeper Mark Bixler made four saves.
Blacksburg 4, Christiansburg 0
CHRISTIANSBURG -- Tim Becker netted two goals to help the Bruins (10-0, 4-0) remain undefeated.
Daniel Mitchell and Michael Breske also scored for Blacksburg.

DUBLIN -- Stuart Maxey scored four times for the Spartans (4-6-1, 2-3).
Johnny Hughes chipped in a goal and three assists for Salem.
Robert Powell had three assists for the Spartans.
Daniel Turpin and Logan Haynes scored for Pulaski County.

William Fleming 8, Halifax County 2
Nathaniel Scere notched two goals and two assists to lead the Colonels (4-6, 3-4).
Godson Kamandala scored two goals, while Alrick Allen contributed two assists.

BEDFORD -- Liberty's (4-5-2, 4-2-2) Taylor Overstreet scored on an assist from Logan Johnson with less than a minute to play.

AMHERST -- David Jackson had three goals to propel the Cavaliers (9-2, 8-0) past the Lancers (4-2-1).
Tim Bullock added two goals and two assists for Jefferson Forest.

GALAX -- Jose Martinez netted two goals as the Maroon Tide (11-0-1, 3-0) hammered the Green Wave.

BROOKVILLE -- Maggie Rawlins scored both of the Minettes' (4-4, 3-2) goals.
Danielle Shuey made seven saves and held the Bees (5-3, 2-3) scoreless.
Vaca South
SW Virginia Home School 3, Dayspring Christian 1
ROCKY MOUNT -- Jordan Mordick scored two goals and had an assist as Southwest Virginia Home School won the play-in game for the VACA tournament at Christian Heritage Academy.
The Conquerors (2-7) will play Friday at Christian Heritage against an opponent to be determined.
Zoe Campbell had a goal and an assist for the winners. Kayla Goodman made seven saves.
Alex Large scored for Dayspring.
Blue Ridge Conference
Virginia Episcopal 3, North Cross 2, OT
Eliza Parrott scored three minutes into overtime to give the Bishops (8-6-1, 5-2-1) a conference win.
Hallie Martin and Seely Stephenson both scored goals for North Cross (8-3, 7-2).
Boys' Lacrosse
Patrick Henry 16, New River Valley 3
SHAWSVILLE -- Ben Quinn recorded six goals and one assist, and Kyle Smith added three goals and three assists to lead Patrick Henry (5-4).
Drew Anderson notched three goals and Charlie Dickenson had one goal and two assists.
Chase Amacher led New River Valley (2-6) with a goal and an assist.

Monica Scott scored seven goals to lead Patrick Henry.
