Jeremy Mowles' Glenvar High School wrestling career blossomed. Now he is headed to Bloomsburg.

Mowles, who won his second VHSL Group A championship by claiming the 140-pound division earlier this month at the Salem Civic Center, has given an oral commitment to Bloomsburg (Pa.).

Bloomsburg is a Division II school in most sports, but the Huskies' wrestling program competes successfully at the Division I level.

Three Bloomsburg wrestlers qualified for the recent NCAA championships and one -- 141-pounder Matt Moley -- finished eighth to earn All-American honors.

"It feels great to be able to come out of Single-A and have the chance to wrestle in Division I," Mowles said. "Not a lot of people get that opportunity."

Holskey, Keener make preseason A-A roster

Two Timesland baseball players -- Lord Botetourt's Josh Holskey and Alleghany's Steven Keener -- have been named to the second team on the Louisville Slugger preseason high school All-America squad.

Both players made the team as first basemen. The teams were selected by the staff of Collegiate Baseball.

Holskey batted .471 with seven home runs, eight doubles and a .624 on-base percentage as a junior, making first-team All-Region III and first-team All-Timesland. He has signed with Campbell University.

Keener, a Liberty University signee, batted .441 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs. He batted .500 with runners in scoring position.

Carlisle's Harris earns VIS honor

Carlisle senior Jamila Harris has been named the Virginia Independent Schools Division III girls basketball player of the year.

Harris, a 5-foot-9 small forward, averaged 26.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game as the Chiefs won the VIS Division III state title.

Harris, who played at George Washington for two years before transferring to Carlisle for her junior and senior seasons, has received scholarship offers from a pair of NCAA Division II schools -- Fayetteville State and Pfeffier -- according to Carlisle coach Tony Jones.

Titans' Hancock opts for Hargrave

Hidden Valley basketball standout Luke Hancock will play next year for the postgraduate team at Hargrave.

Hancock, a 6-foot-5 small forward, averaged 13.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game as Hidden Valley went 28-2 and reached the VHSL Group AA semifinals. Hancock shot 52.1 percent from the field, including 32.1 percent from 3-point range as a senior.

Hargrave's 2007-08 roster included Division I signees Chris Braswell (Georgetown), Roscoe Davis (West Virginia), Eladio Espinosa (South Florida), Damier Pitts (Marshall), Dee Bost (Mississippi State), Eshaunte Jones (Oregon State) and Dexter Moore (Coastal Carolina).

"I think he's got a chance to play at the next level," Hidden Valley coach Chris Morris said of Hancock. "He's just got to play against that kind of competition all the time."

Radford XC champion commits to Lipscomb

Two-time Group A cross country champion Nathan Brame of Radford has made an oral commitment to sign with Division I Lipscomb University in Nashville.

The Radford senior won his second cross country title in November with a time of 15:59.09.

Craig County's Jessica Alley, who finished fourth in the Group A girls' 3,200 last spring, will sign a scholarship with Longwood.

Salem football stars to continue careeers

Salem linebacker John Ribble and quarterback Nick Leftwich have made their college choices.

Ribble, has accepted an invitation to walk on at William and Mary, while Leftwich has signed with UVa-Wise.

Correction

Patrick Henry defensive end Gerard Payne and Lord Botetourt linebacker Darryl Stone have signed scholarships with Glenville State.

Information about their signings was incorrect in the March 22 newspaper.
