Bruins roll on Demons in River Ridge opener

CHRISTIANSBURG -- Mark Manthe was 3-for-4, Eric Houff was 2-for-4 with a home run, and Steven Ball added two hits to lead Blacksburg to an 11-1 win over Christiansburg in a River Ridge District game Thursday.

George Perkovich pitched all six innings, struck out five and allowed four hits for the Bruins (3-1, 1-0).

Brad Cox was 2-for-3 for Christiansburg (2-2, 0-1).

BASEBALL

NONDISTRICT

Hidden Valley 6, Georgetown (S.C.) 0

GEORGETOWN, S.C. -- Mikey O'Brien permitted just three hits and walked one while striking out 14 as Hidden Valley advanced to the semifinals of the championship bracket of the Mingo Bay Clash with a win over Georgetown (5-7).

Brett Mollenhauer led the Titans (5-0) with three hits and scored two runs. Zach Helgeson finished with two hits and three RBIs. Bradley Moore had two hits and scored two runs.

The Titans play at Conway, S.C., today.

William Byrd 4, Staunton River 3, 8 innings

Brandon Garnett's suicide squeeze in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed the Terriers' Bradley Mattox to score the game-winning run.

William Byrd (4-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Joe West went 2-for-3 and Chris Terry went 2-for-4 to lead Staunton River (2-3).

Jefferson Forest 3, North Stafford 1, 9 innings

FREDERICKSBURG -- Matt Wallman doubled in the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Cavaliers past the Wolverines in the Bash at the Bend tournament at Riverbend High School.

Shane Timerblake had two hits for Jefferson Forest (2-1).

Cavaliers starting pitcher Hunter Gordon gave up one unearned run in 6 13 innings, but Trevor Johnston earned the win with 2 23 innings of no-hit relief.

Jefferson Forest plays King George today in the semifinals.

Galax 6, Auburn 5

GALAX -- Jacob Woodel hit a two-run single in a four-run third inning for the Maroon Tide.

Tyler Houk was 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs scored for Galax (2-3).

Michael Spencer had two RBIs for Auburn (3-2).

Bassett 10, George Washington 3

BASSETT -- Caleb Naff continued his hot streak, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs for the Bengals.

Jonathan Dove and Patrick Martin each had two RBIs for Bassett (6-0).

Jeremy Moore got the win for Bassett, scattering six hits over six innings.

Narrows 5, Giles 3

NARROWS -- Gage Dent struck out six to lead the Green Wave.

Corey Lowe was 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and Mark Martin went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for Narrows (3-3).

Zach Atkins was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run for Giles (3-3-1).

Fort Chiswell 9, Northwood 1

MAX MEADOWS -- Mark Galimore went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs and Drew White struck out six for Fort Chiswell (4-1).

The Pioneers' Tyler Akers and Hody Viars each went 2-for-3 with a RBI.

James River 4, Riverheads 1

BUCHANAN -- Caleb Dorton struck out 12 and allowed only five hits in a complete game effort for the Knights.

Andrew Tucker had a RBI double in a three-run first inning for James River (2-2).

SOFTBALL

NONDISTRICT

Auburn 8, Christiansburg 2

RINER -- Auburn junior right-hander Heather Dindinger broke her own school record by striking out 19 in the nondistrict victory.

Dindinger fanned 18 batters in a game last season.

Dindinger permitted three hits.

She helped her own cause by going 2-for-3. Kerri Styne went 3-for-4 for the Eagles (4-1), cranking a two-run home run in the first inning. She also had a single and double and finished with three RBIs.

In the sixth inning, Christiansburg's Nicole Hinkley delivered a two-out, two-run double.

Carroll County 12, Radford 8

RADFORD -- Amber Cannaday went 3-for-4 and scored four runs to lead the Cavaliers.

Ashley Easter went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Nikki Tibbs scored four runs for Radford (1-4), but the Bobcats committed five errors.

Sherry Gillespie was 3-for-4 for Carroll County (1-4).

Giles 12, Fort Chiswell 1, 5 innings

PEARISBURG -- Danielle Bandy went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and three stolen bases to lead the Spartans.

Shanda Higgenbotham finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI for Giles (3-2).

BOYS' SOCCER

NONDISTRICT

Galax 7, Graham 0

GALAX -- Dio Rodriguez and Jorge Mendez each scored two goals to lead the Maroon Tide.

Charlie Adams had 10 saves and recorded his second shutout of the season for Galax (3-0).

Giles 11, Narrows 1

PEARISBURG -- Cody Journell netted three goals and added an assist to lead the Spartans.

Travis Scott and Dru Kerr each scored two goals for Giles (3-0-1).

Hunter Light scored the lone goal for the Green Wave.
