ELLISTON -- Henry Hall scored 15 of his team-high 20 points in the second quarter to lead Eastern Montgomery to the 64-54 victory in boys' basketball.

The Mustangs (2-2) outscored the Fighting Blues 26-9 in the second period as Hall consistently got open against Parry McCluer's zone defense. Brad Wooten added 16 points, hitting two 3-pointers in the opening quarter. Wooten's marksmanship caused Parry McCluer to concentrate on him, leaving Hall open.

Hall also had four steals. Shane Eggleston scored a game-high 22 points for Parry McCluer (0-2).

Dallas Lund and Josh Woody contributed 12 and 10, respectively.

Rashard Coleman scored 19 points as the Virginia Heat of Martinsville got out to a 13-point lead after one quarter and went on to win its first game in the Celtic Invitational at the Bast Center.

The Celtics got 17 points from Mindaugas Markevicius and 14 from Arche' Hicklin.

In the other half of the doubleheader, Gonzaga High School out of Washington, D.C., got out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter, but Benedictine tied the score by halftime, before falling to Gonzaga 61-55.

Gonzaga and the Heat will play today at 1 p.m., followed by Roanoke Catholic and Benedictine at 3 p.m.

BUCHANAN -- Brook Arritt's one-hander from outside the lane off an inbounds pass with .2 seconds left went awry, allowing the Minutemen to escape with the victory in the second game of the James River Invitational.

After Arritt's 3-pointer cut Liberty's lead to 66-65 with .2 left, the Cavaliers got the ball back when the Minutemen were called for an offensive foul on the inbounds pass. Liberty survived, however, when Arritt couldn't get the game's final shot to go down.

Rick Alderman had 20 points and Darius Randolph 19 to lead the Cavaliers in their season opener.

Michael Harmon had 16 points, Kordero Thompson 11 and Anthony Reynolds 10 for Liberty.

BUCHANAN -- James River christened its new gymnasium with a victory over North Cross in the first game of the James River Invitational.

The Knights (5-0) trailed 43-42 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored their guests 19-5 in the final eight minutes for the victory. Anthony Banks, who led the Raiders (2-2) with 17 points, fouled out midway through the quarter.

Corey Ware led James River with 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

DaVon Ross added 13 points.

Franklin County fought back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to come within one point of the Bulldogs, but Martin's steal ended the Eagles' comeback hopes.

Martin scored 15 points to lead Martinsville while Kendra Reid and Aishah Jones scored 14 and 11 points, respectively. Miranda Smith scored 13 points to lead the Eagles.
