North Cross wins state soccer title

RICHMOND -- The North Cross boys' soccer team won the Virginia Independent Schools Division II title Friday, topping Denbigh Baptist 2-0 at Sports Backers Stadium.

Seniors Mark Meyer and Sheel Patel scored, and Yezid Gracia had six saves to lead the Raiders (16-2-4) to the win over the Newport News school.

Meyer and Edward Gracia assisted on the two goals.

The win gives North Cross coach Richard Cook his first VIS title. Cook has been the boys' soccer coach at the school for 36 years. This year, the Raiders opted to move the soccer season from the spring to fall, a change that allowed the Raiders to compete for a VIS title.

Denbigh Baptist ends the year at 19-2-1.

Gay repeats in VIS

WOODBERRY FOREST -- Jane Gay won her second straight Virginia Independent Schools Division II cross country title. Gay, who also won the event last year, finished the 5k run in 18 minutes, 57 seconds.

Roanoke Catholic's Sean Flynn finished fourth in the boys race, and the Celtics' Mirenda Gwin placed 16th in the girls event.

Raiders lose to Grace

WILLIAMSBURG -- North Cross fell to Grace Christian in three games in the semifinals of the VISVA state volleyball tournament on Friday at Walsingham Academy.
