ATLANTA -- Thursday night's visit to Bobby Dodd Stadium started as a real rip-off for Virginia Tech's football team.
When the team arrived at the stadium some two hours before kickoff, four players discovered their white road jerseys for the game were missing in the visitors' locker room. Longtime Tech equipment manager Lester Karlin had hung the jerseys in their respective lockers during the team's walk-through Friday afternoon.
Tech quarterbacks Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor, cornerback Brandon Flowers, and rover Kam Chancellor were the victimized players.
There was no evidence of any break-in. Officials from both schools could find nothing suspicious when they reviewed the video surveillance tape. All entrances to the locker room have either remained locked, manned by security, or under video surveillance.
All four players warmed up in white practice jerseys supplied by Georgia Tech. Karlin and his staff put a strip of maroon tape over the words "Yellow Jackets" that runs over the top of the jersey number on the front. The players' last names on the makeshirt jerseys appeared to be written in Magic Marker ink.
Shortly before kickoff, replacement jerseys arrived for all of the players except Glennon. The jerseys were delivered shortly before kickoff via airmail courtesy of Roanoke attorney John Rocovich, a former rector of the Tech Board of Visitors. Rocovich pilots his own private plane.
Flowers and Chancellor changed into their real jerseys in the first half after starting in an alternate jersey.
Wheeler, Royal hurt
Hokies tight end Sam Wheeler and flanker Eddie Royal both sustained injuries in the first half and didn't play the rest of the night.
Wheeler, a redshirt sophomore from Blacksburg who has 15 catches for 211 yards this season, suffered a sprained left knee ligament while run-blocking in the first quarter. Wheeler was helped from the field and then carted to the dressing room.
Royal sustained a strain of his left calf on the next-to-last play of the first quarter. The senior had caught two passes for 45 yards, including in a 34-yarder.
Linebacker Xavier Adibi injured his ankle during the second half.
Oh, brothers
In a first in Frank Beamer's 21 seasons as Tech head coach, two pairs of brothers started in the same game.
Orion and Cam Martin started at defensive end and whip linebacker, respectively. The Warren brothers -- Brett and Beau -- started at middle linebacker and center, respectively.
Tech tidbits
Sean Glennon's 2-yard touchdown run that gave Tech a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter was the second of his career. ... Cornerback Macho Harris' interception in the second quarter was his third of the season and seventh career pick. ... Redshirt sophomore linebacker Cam Martin registered his first career interception in the second quarter.
Justin Harper's 40-yard TD catch that put the Hokies ahead 17-3 late in the first half was his second scoring reception of the season and fifth of his career. ... Senior Josh Morgan's four catches in the first half enabled him to become the eighth player in Tech history with 100 receptions.
Morgan's 30 receiving yards in the first half boosted his career to total to 1,570, moving him past Myron Richardson and into fifth place on Tech's all-time list.
On deck
The Hokies will take a couple of days off before beginning preparations for their Nov. 10 home date with Florida State. Game time is 3:30 p.m. for the ABC telecast (WSET).
The Seminoles (5-3, 2-3) have beaten the Hokies 12 consecutive times, including wins in the 2000 Sugar Bowl national championship and 2002 Gator Bowl. Beamer's Tech squads are 0-7 vs. Bobby Bowden's Seminoles. The contest marks the first time that FSU has visited Lane Stadium since Tech joined the ACC in 2004.
