Patriots reach WVD volleyball final
Jenny Young had 13 kills and 12 digs and served eight points to lead Patrick Henry to a 25-8, 25-13, 25-12 win over Halifax County in the Western Valley District volleyball tournament semifinals Tuesday night.
The Patriots (16-5) host Franklin County at 7 p.m. Thursday for the tournament title.
Laura Jessee added 10 kills for PH, and Liz Brailsford had nine kills and served eight points.
n Franklin County (16-5) advanced to Thursday's final by topping E.C. Glass 25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20.
Kaitlyn Whitmer led the Eagles with 17 digs and 16 kills. Kristen Bowling had 11 digs and nine service points. Chelsea Holland added nine kills, nine digs and seven points.
Mountain Empire
In Narrows, Grayson County won three games by scores of 25-15 as the Blue Devils won the district title over Galax.
Grayson (21-1) will host Three Rivers District runner-up Auburn in the Region C tournament next week. Galax will travel to Glenvar.
Blue Ridge District
Rachel Fertitta had 17 kills and four blocks to lead Northside to a 25-9, 25-13, 25-9 win over Alleghany in the semifinals of the Blue Ridge District tournament.
Ashley Masterson added 23 assists and seven kills for the Vikings (16-5), who will take on Lord Botetourt in the tournament final at 6 p.m. Thursday. Vannessa Chapman had eight digs and five kills.
n Amy Collier had seven kills and four blocks as Lord Botetourt (16-5) got past William Byrd in four games, 21-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-19.
Macey Tyree had 28 digs and four kills for the Cavaliers. Abbey Martin finished with eight kills and Keegan Brads had 27 assists.
Three Rivers District
At Floyd, Liz Trinchere had 13 kills, seven digs, four aces and two blocks to lead Glenvar (20-1) to a 25-22, 25-14, 25-14 win over Floyd County, moving the Highlanders into Thursday's district final, where they will face Auburn.
Meredith Buckley and Courtney Webb added four aces and five digs apiece for Glenvar.
n Auburn got off to a quick start and defeated Giles 25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 25-16. The Eagles will face Glenvar at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Floyd County.
Hogoheegee District
At Wytheville, George Wythe advanced to the district tournament final by knocking off Northwood 25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 25-13.
n The Maroons (14-7) will take on Chilhowie (13-6), which eliminated Patrick Henry-Glade Spring, 25-19, 25-14, 25-20. The title game is Thursday at George Wythe High School.
Pioneer District
In New Castle, Carly Whiting had 10 kills, five blocks and four aces to lead the way as Craig County won its first-round tournament gave over Covington, 25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 16-25, 15-9.
Emilee Switzer added five kills and 11 digs, and Erin Falls had eight kills and four blocks for the Rockets, who play James River at 6 p.m. today.
Seminole District
In Forest, Jordan Hawkins had 15 kills and two blocks to lead Jefferson Forest to a quarterfinal win over Amherst County, 24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-11.
Megan Prothero had 30 digs, six kills and five aces for the Cavaliers, who will play Brookville in Thursday's semifinals at Liberty High School. Tori Blanks had 26 digs and Whitney Bonheim had 16 digs and three kills.
n In Bedford, Melanie Updike had six kills, 5 aces and three blocks to lead Liberty past Heritage, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23.
The Minettes play Rustburg in the district semifinals, which is at Liberty. Casey Bartholomew added 15 digs and four aces, and Savanah Graham had 21 assists and four digs. Brooke Davis finished with seven kills and three blocks.
n Rustburg advanced by topping Staunton River, 25-18, 25-17, 25-15.
Southern Valley District
At Stuarts Draft, Rockbridge County was knocked out of the winners' bracket in the semifinals of the district tournament, falling to Stuarts Draft 14-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-11.
The Wildcats will play for third place and a berth in the Region III tournament against host Robert E. Lee-Staunton on Thursday.
Stuarts Draft will play Fort Defiance in the district final.
Southwest District
At Grundy, Marion advanced to the tournament semifinals with a 25-10, 25-15, 25-21 win over Grundy.
The Cavaliers will face Abingdon in Thursday's semifinals at Carroll County High School.
Abingdon defeated Graham to reach the semifinals.
In the other semifinal, Carroll County will take on Tazewell, which defeated Richlands in five games.
FOOTBALL
Galax 20, Bland County 19
BLAND -- Aundrey Sams rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns, and Galax (3-5, 2-1) held on for a Mountain Empire District win Monday night.
Bland County (6-2, 2-1) got 114 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Korey Kennedy, including a 25-yard run in the fourth-quarter that made the score 20-19.
The Bears went for a two-point conversion, but the run failed and Galax came away with the win.
Adam Kirk rushed for 117 yards and scored a TD for Bland County.
